To simplify the question: How large is the insurance cost difference between a C140 and a C150?

Let's assume a 75 hour pilot with a wet ink PPL and a Tailwheel endorsement (15 hours tw).

How high is the Taildragger premium vs trike? How much more per year would the C140 cost vs the C150, all else equal?

My first year of insurance in my 180 with 100 hours tailwheel and 5 time in type for 85k hull value cost me just over 1500/year (350 TT)
Second year with 250 hours tailwheel and 150 time in type for 135k hull value cost me just over 1600/year. (500 TT)

Anyone with a 182 of similar hull value/experience care to share?

First year student pilot zero time in my 172 35,000 Hull was 1600
2nd year with 250 or so hours was 850
First year 170 insurance with 450 total time zero tail wheel was 2300
Second year with 600 total and 150 in the 170 was 1800

But i also added an instrument on the second year in The 170 and I know rates went up this year due to industry wide losses.

When I checked recently (50 total hrs, only 4 tg), it was about 50% more. That number would reduce 10% after I hit 75 hrs, 10% after 100, and another 10% after 1 yr renewal. Coverage starts day 1 for dual, solo coverage starts after 10-15 hrs of dual in that model plane.

Pretty much any trike fixed gear plane just needed a cfi checkout. That probably would be just an hour flight for you to show him you can fly it.

You get another discount with instrument rating, also if you are part of a training program like wings another discount.

A 140 insurance quote was 1/2 the cost of the stinson 108 insurance quote when i checked.

Also, you pay quarterly, so you realize the discounts first year if you fly the hrs.

I can't speak to the relative expenses, but my first year of insurance (instrument rated, around 300TT but low t/w hours and no time in type) was around $1200 on $35k hull value. It's only money, get the 140 :)

For the life of me, I can't comprehend how aircraft insurance rates are calculated.

I was in your situation 8 years ago. Low time pilot 0 TW 25k was ~1400. Now I’m at 700.
I wouldn’t avoid a plane for the insurance cost alone.
