ASES checkride in a light sport amphib?

It looks like we're going to have the Icon A5 living here for a while. It's a friend of the hangar owner and the hangar owner is looking to get checked out in it. I do know that, technically, you do not need a DPE ride for a light sport amphib or seaplane but just a checkride with a second seaplane rated CFI. However, can he take a ride with a DPE in the light sport for the full ASES rating?
 
Yes.

I was going to do mine in a friend’s light sport Cub but the examiner and I wouldn’t fit due to weight problems. I ended up traveling out of state to do an accelerated course and just get it out of the way.
 
Paul Bertorelli did a piece on exactly that on AvWeb (you can find it on YT); the only difference after the training was whether you got a sign-off or flew with a DPE.
