LED Tail Light on 172SP

Beware of whelen tail strobes. They require cutting a hole to fit the large power supply.I have Whelen Orions on my wings and a Whelen rudder top beacon (Holy crap that beacon is bright!) but for the tail strobe I chose an Aveo the the flush base. And it's freakin' bright, too!

I was expecting the same. However, I was surprised it is altogether different and less expensive. After more research I learned “LED Ground Recognition Light” Cessna part number 01-0771560-00 is the appropriate LED upgrade for the 172S and is used on the latest models straight from the factory. It is a complete assembly and is lower profile than the enormous Whelen 7105501 retrofit. The entire assembly is different but it is a direct replacement for the older flashing halogen quartz style 01-0770509-07 Whelen Beacon Light Assembly Self Contained (28 Volt).

I wasn't expecting this so I ordered replacement parts for the old style to get back online ASAP. However, next time it will get this new LED assembly.

Hopefully a moderator can approve my last post with links included and all necessary info on the new LED upgrade for a 172S. My post says it is awaiting approval so I hope someone looks at those!

Wow! I didn't expect that. That's less than the Whelen price. Thanks for the links...I'm tempted to buy it now before Textron decides to up the price.

Whelen Chromas 10/10. They're kinda expensive at like 100 a pop, but they give you the brightness of professionally installed LEDs without the cost of professionally installing them. You just plug them in like a new bulb and you're off to the races. They're also TSOd and 100% legal.

I have a PSA in my tailcone since there is no chroma for it and I do like it. It's durable and super cheap, but it's just not even close to being as bright. They're not TSOd so there's some gray area in the legality.

Pricey like the Whelen, but very effective for the nav lights. They're white, so unlike the Chroma, you'll need to retain the colored lenses. For me, that was actually a small cost savings, as I didn't have to buy new white lenses, and it also means that there aren't different part numbers left and right.

The tail...I'm actually not sure what I have in there. LED now, but one that my A&P had on the shelf that he just gave me. He signed it off, so he's happy. Not the same quality as the Whelen or AeroLED, but works nicely and assuredly better than the crappy incandescent back there.

My taxi light burned out and I meant to put in an LED...but the shop swapped it out with a tractor light before I could stop them. (Since it's a leaseback, anything under $500 is done at their discretion.) Oh well. I should just swap it out before it burns out. Also haven't done the beacon yet. Had the beacon fail, so thought I had my opportunity, but it turned out to be the switch. Should probably just bite the bullet and do that one as well even though I have a working light.
