If into sci-fi at all, Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy or 2312. Occasional adult situations.

He has birthdays and other events coming up. Make it part of a bigger thing you do. My nieces and nephews expect weird science stuff from me at this point. Experiment kits. Geodes to break,-small telescope- all depends on age to make it appropriate.
 
I bought this book and read it in three days. A 12 year old with a liking to airplanes and ginormous rockets might get a kick out of it. Not hard to read, for me, and I was in the "slow kids" classes at 12. I did have to search a bunch of what the vehicles and airplanes looked like. Took me down many google rabbit holes.

I got my 12 year old nephew a second hand foam RC Super Cub. He's gonna wreck it, so didn't want to buy him a new one yet. I think he'll get a kick out of it, and learn a bit about the ins and outs of flight.
