Where and how much you paid for PPL

1974 Osan AB Korea, Cessna 150 $9/hr, CFI $5/hr.

That was a good year.

Mine was just over $1500 in a well worn Cessna 150 in the summer of '74. I remember the prices had jumped for wet rentals because of the OPEC oil embargo/"crisis" the previous fall and the steep rise in avga$.

Mine was cheaper than:
A. Bad year at the casino
B. Hookers and blow
C. Two DUI's
D. Any marriage I've had

And more fun than all the above.
(Except maybe B)

All have definitely been learning experiences lol.

I missed the entire gas crisis because I was stationed there. So I had that going for me, which is nice. :)

Roughly $2500 in 1993, including the written and practical tests. The 152 was $41/hr, the instructor was $15-20/hr, and my test prep materials were one $17 book (Gleim, IIRC).

My checkride was in November 2016 at KCCB. Including ground school, the written exam fees, and a headset, I was around the 7k mark. Cessna 152 was $100/hr wet and CFI was $50/hr

Los Angeles California 2015-2016 Diamondstar DA40 - $29,800. My case was very unique to say the least. I talked about my cost and experience in the video below

i hate this spreadsheet

14k start to finish in a 2014 Cirrus SR20 in Northern California, Lake Tahoe Region

2013- $12,500 for accelerated program at Tailwheels in Lakeland Florida...Could have been done cheaper and closer but was worth every penny IMO.

Haven't crashed yet...

Hearing the name Tailwheels brings back memories of years ago when they operated out of Winter Haven KGIF.

I signed up for their PPL course, on the day I was due to begin I arrived there to be met by a lot of nervous activity....a student, a young lady on only her second or third lesson had just stalled on short final in a C150 and before her instructor could save it they hit the ground on the runway just passed the numbers, fortunately it impacted more flat than nose first so they walked away with minor cuts and bruises !

It was a newly minted CFI and she was his first gig !...and I found out he was supposed to be the guy I was being allocated to ! ...I only saw him visit the office once that week and then he was never seen again, I will say I went on to fly with a fantastic CFI who had a great skill of getting the best out of his students, sadly shortly after I finished up he left to join the Airlines.

Yep ya gotta be positioned and quick to grab the controls. Did that Saturday morning with a student. Didn't look like he intended to flare, so I did it for him.

Bloomington Indiana, I think IU college students drive the price of the local flight school up. $135/hr wet C172 and $35/hr instructor. 2015/16 Total $11,226, I took 49.8 hours mainly because of some winter weather problems right before the check ride. I was ready for my check ride at 39.2 hours minus just need 0.8 hrs, but between weather and getting the examiner scheduled really hosed me. If I include the headset, insurance, charts, and other flight related stuff I purchased it would be $11,656.

Solo 48 years ago Champ 10 hr $150,

PPL 15 years ago $5000.00 and additional cost for auto fuel for long drive to airport.

That $5000 includes books, ground school, headphones, etc., as well as plane rental and CFI.

Those are average rates, a little lower I might add. Where I'm at it's $145 & $150 for a C172, $45 for CFI.

Check out KBRD. I got my IR there in 2017. Reasonable rates I feel and good instructors.

Got my PPL just north of BRD in Backus. Of course that guy has shut shop and gone South. Was very reasonable and provided accommodation.

I paid around 6K, in 2010. All in a 172.

A proper plane to learn how to fly in!

Mine is 80 per hr, avoid my state as well .

Which is crazy, considering your location. At least in my opinion.

I got my private in Fargo too, back in 2010. I think I had around $12.5k invested to get me a private certificate. Instructor rates that time was $50 for primary training and $70 for advanced training or training in your own airplane.

It is much cheaper where I'm instructing at now, and I'd bet I get the same amount per hour as the guys in Fargo got, despite the difference in hourly rate the school charges.

About $1K, including DPE fee? 1974, Brand New C-150 Commuter II was $18/hr wet.

If memory serves correctly I spent about $8500 in the Phoenix metro area. I passed my checkride in the Summer of 2015. I shopped around to find the least expensive plane and instructor possible. I paid $80/hr for the first 30 hours to fly a Cessna 150. The instruction rate was $45/hr for the first half. At about 30 hours, I took a few months off and came back flying a 172 at $103/hr. The instruction rate had gone up to $50/hr.

Probably about $5k 19 years ago. $49/hr 152 plus $25/hr cfi plus check rides, ground school, tests, and supplies. Same school is now $155/hr 172r plus $75/hr cfi. Part 141.

I flew with Del Sol in Albuquerque in 2010-2011 and racked $14,600 from discovery flight to checkride, which I took at some 72+ hours.

I paid $3600 for my PPL at the Hoffman Pilot Center at BJC (then Jefferson County Airport, Colorado). Of course, that was back in 1981.

Here in SW Wis, it's 110 wet for the PA-28 and 40 for the CFI.. Not bad at all..
