TFRs

One glaring error: "FAA began issuing FDC NOTAMs which created TFRs over major sporting events to mitigate the risk of aerial terrorism."
Should read: "FAA began issuing FDC NOTAMs which created TFRs over major sporting events to mitigate the loss of advertising revenue to unaffiliated aerial advertisers."

This caused an issue with me a while back... and I'll pose the question here... If you are departing a controlled airport and the departure puts you thru a "Stadium TFR" is it up to you or the controller to know that? will the controller warn you or keep you clear with departure instructions? Or do you have to say "unable" and explain why??

If the stadium TFR extends into the airspace "controlled" by the tower, and they approved a departure heading that puts you through the TFR, then yes, you have should be fine. As with most of the gray area stuff involving the FAA, it never hurts to "get it on the tape". All of the routine stadium TFRs include language that is something like "except as a directed by ATC". The Disneyland TFR is routinely penetrated by IFR, and sometime VFR, departures from Fullerton being routed over the mouse house by SoCal TRACON.

As is the Disney World TFR for folks heading into KISM.

Agreed, most stadium TFRs have wording similar to "pilot may not enter ... unless in contact with ATC". So by talking to ATC, you are invalidating the TFR for yourself and the restriction does not apply to you anymore. Technically.
I had a pilot tell me once that a controller gave him a vector that almost made him bust a stadium TFR. I tried hard several times to explain to him that it is not possible. I asked him numerous times to read the TFR to understand why. No success. :)

Read the TFRs, fellow pilots, most stadium restrictions are pretty benign. Unless there is a fighter jet fly-over for a big game, in which case the controller knows and should keep you away.

"THE AIRCRAFT OPERATION HAS BEEN AUTHORIZED BY ATC FOR OPERATIONAL OR SAFETY PURPOSES,"

Does VFR flight following qualify as "authorization"?

It doesn't "authorize" you to enter class C. https://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/agc/practice_areas/regulations/interpretations/data/interps/2006/granby - (2006) legal interpretation.pdf
How is a TFR different?

The difference is, in the Granby letter the pilot is talking to the wrong facility. So yeah, if you call up a facility providing FF that doesn’t serve the area where the TFR is located, that would be a problem.
