Easy way to find out when a VOR was decommissioned?

Anyone have any suggestions for how to determine (approximately) when a VOR was decommissioned? The specific one I'm interested in is DTN, located on the field at KDTN (Shreveport Downtown, LA). It was still in use a few years ago, but somewhere along the way it disappeared from the sectional. The VOR approach that used it went away in 2016.

It's not important, so not worth making an appointment at the Library of Congress to dig through dusty boxes, but if there was an online archive of old sectionals one could peruse, I might spend 15 minutes digging through that.

I did a little Googling, and this is pretty much all I found:

This document marking a VOR approach using that navaid (DTN VOR 14) for deletion in 2016: https://www.federalregister.gov/doc...ff-minimums-and-obstacle-departure-procedures

Not included in the list of VORs to be decommissioned for the transition to Next Gen (I think because it was already gone): https://www.federalregister.gov/doc...-generation-air-transportation-system-nextgen

I also found this, which is hardly authoritative, and I dunno how old the data is: http://www.pilotnav.com/navaid/faa-1071

<snark>

Fly down there and ask for that VOR approach. Wait for the controller to yell that VOR was decommissioned in ****. Thank him as you file your ASRS report.

<End snark>

Good luck on your search.

Hah. Actually, I was thinking that if all else fails I could just toss in that question to the ground controller when I get my taxi clearance next time I'm there...

Or call the tower on the phone.

NOTAM says “NAV VOR DECOMMISSIONED 1412151556-PERM”

Go here

Change from Location search to Archive search

Many thanks, eetrojan!

How did you figure out the date, though? It looks like you can only search one day at a time via the archive method, and the location method only shows current NOTAMs.

Hi Jim, using the archives, I think I started in 2016 because that's when you said the VOR approach went away, and then went back a few months at a time looking for the NOTAM announcing the decommissioned status of the VOR itself.

Out of curiosity, I just now looked to see how long the NOTAM was published after the VOR was decommissioned on 12/15/2014. It ran for more than a year, from 12/15/2014 to 01/23/2016.

Hope you're having a Merry Christmas! Joe
