So my roll is getting low. Triangular, yellow, .095. Thought I'd look around for a new one.
Did you know how many sizes, cross-sections, materials, colors there are??
round/triangle/square/braided/6,7,8 -sided, Titanium now!

I think I will just get some 1/8" steel cable and attach it to the head, use it for 10 years.

many sites offering reviews.

When I was a kid, my dad had a home-brew trimmer. Used a 1/8" steel rod "blade". Sent up a nice rooster tail of sparks when it touched the curb---lots more exciting than the boring commercial edger I used when I was old enough to be pressed into lawn service. Anyway, the steel rod still wore down quickly enough. I don't remember how often he changed it out, but he had a drawer full of replacements and turned to it regularly. Your cable might not last as long as you think, and would tear the bejeesus out of everything it touched...you'd have to be way more careful around wooden fences, trees, your own feet, etc.

The spark thing brings up another issue; fire hazard. It is why they told us not to use a mower to knock down weeds, when I had some acreage. Apparently metal on rock has started many brush fires.

I prob won't do the homemade trimmer cable thing. Too worried about it breaking off and hitting me.

I'd be more worried about wayward strands coming off of the cable...yikes.

I bought one of these a couple summers ago and have barely used one quarter of the spool. I trim around the house every other week and a 15'x100' easement about once a month.
