Real world cruise speed differences - M20E and C182

I thought the construction bracing struts on high wing airplanes were to counteract the normal tendency for the wing to go on the bottom? Don't they mostly keep the airplane from flipping over? :)

You could right! Or maybe those struts are just to catch the doors when passengers open them on the ground with a tail wind?
 
Ok ok I'll be the oddball.. I'll flight plan for 130ktas in P28R in the rental I use.

Why is that "oddball"? That's what the median Arrow fleet generally does. I do 130-135 on 9gph 6-10k depending on the weight, and OAT/density altitude, on my Arrow II. Sure, I've done 140KTAS at 75% power in the dead of summer, lightweight and solo, but you won't see me touting that number as realistic or replicable for block or flight planning purposes. Again, outliers are great for marketing, but not much else.

The only thing oddball around here is the comparison in cruise speed between a de facto 2-seater mooney and a stiff legged 4-seater Cessna 1xx series in the first place.
 
182 is pretty sweet. Burn a lotta gas and go kinda fast or little gas and go kinda slow. Roomy and easy to work on. I like the fresh air vents a lot more over other make/models I rode and flown. Burn $2.60 (current price) ethanol-free car gas.

Only place to get car gas are of booze where I live is marinas. And I'll bet there its no cheaper than avgas.
 
In my 182 I plan for 140ktas, but regularly see upward of about 145ktas, even with some people and bags. I have a 2012 182 non-turbo with the 230hp engine. I plan for 12.8gph but depending on the altitude I more realistically see actual burn about 12-12.5gph. My bird seems to be several knots faster than the book, while flying and leaning it exactly per the POH

Readings were taken while flying as straight and level as I could get. It was bumpy today.
I don't have instantaneous fuel flow. Fuel burn for the trip was 12.5 gph.
Had a 290 pounder and a 235 pounder up front, about 50 lbs in baggage, and 50 gal. of gas.

I sure didn't! I went back and fixed it.

Good catch. Thank you. I didn't think I could beat book numbers with an out of rig airplane, but I quadruple checked my calcs and couldn't figure out what I was forgetting.
