I was getting a little impatient waiting for my preheater so I decided to just throw some 100ll into the cowling followed by a match. I heard some crackling noises. My CFI thinks I may have damaged something but we flew it for 3 hours without any problems. I think he doesn't know what he's talking about because we take of on a treadmill thereby reducing the amount of air coming in the cowling eliminating any thermal expansion cracks. I know this because I walked around the block twice. Does anyone happen to have an engineering article that completely agrees with me ?

A historical note to this:

Our Geschwader could get only a small number of planes into the air per day. The preheating units for the engines had got stuck in the frozen mud far behind our lines. We gathered wood, preheating the engines over open fires to get them started.
