I'm thinking that was Dire Straits.
The group that recorded the song was Dire Straits and they put it on their 1984 or 85 album Money for Nothing (BTW one of the first digitally recorded rock albums) but on the title track it was Sting who was singing the line 'I want my MTV'
You both are right.
Mark Knoffler wrote it. He really was in a department store in New York when he heard a guy in the appliance department say what the guy in the song says as they watched MTV on the display of TVs.

Weird idnit? My ex used to marvel at my ability to recall obscure and totally useless facts. BTW, I remembered getting stamps yesterday at the grocery store, but I forgot laundry detergent.
