Join AOPA and contact the medical dept. The resident POA expert has left the building.

No.

Unless you've been cited or arrested for using it. And don't be under its effects when flying.

If you've never been diagnosed with asthma, it should not be a problem. This is what the AME guide says:
http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org...aam/ame/guide/special_iss/all_classes/asthma/

You have to go to dr Bruce's web page as he has left the building.

Question 18n on the medical application asks about whether you have used any illegal drugs in the last two years. From the FAA guide for AME's:
For a "yes" answer to Item 18.n., the Examiner should obtain a detailed description of the history. A history of substance dependence or abuse is disqualifying. The Examiner must defer issuance of a certificate if there is doubt concerning an applicant's substance use.
For more details, see http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org...m/ame/guide/app_process/app_history/item18/n/.

On the Asthma front, see http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org...aam/ame/guide/special_iss/all_classes/asthma/.

For medical consultation on these issues, I recommend Dr. Bruce Chien.

Then it becomes a matter of geography since marijuana use is legal in a number of states.

.....or maybe not since the Feds outlaw it countrywide.

FAA is a federal agency, it's illegal when you are filling out their form.

How do you know you have asthma if it has never been diagnosed? There are any number of things that could be causing the symptoms you relate to asthma. Some are minor and wouldn't cause you any problems in getting cleared medically for anything in the world. Some are more significant and getting medical care is in your best interest, not from a flight standpoint but from a life standpoint. If you have trouble taking in oxygen get yourself to a doctor and let them figure out why. (It also wouldn't be a horrible idea to stop taking smoke into your lungs, no matter what the source of that smoke is. If you have problems already there is no reason to intentionally make them worse.)

You know that's a good question. When I got my medical, I was not tested. No pee pee no blood. However a buddy of mine was asked to provide a urine sample.

I wonder if he looked like a dope head to the Doc. ? Has anyone else been asked to provide urine ?

I've had to supply urine for every medical.

Urine is more common than not, but not universal. I have filled the bottle urine twice in the last quarter century... I'm pretty sure they are looking for excess sugar, not pot. Never been asked for blood...

Urine is common they are only checking for sugar.
Not just common -- it's required unless you provide lab tests which include blood sugar levels. If an AME doesn't have you pee in a cup, and you didn't provide lab test results, the AME isn't doing what the FAA requires.

Bingo!

I've always had to provide pee. I'm almost sure they are looking for protein as well as sugar although I'm not sure what that would indicate. I know I busted the protein test years ago but the AME just said to come back the next day after drinking a lot of water because high protein was something that often happened in young women. I don't know if that's true or if he was supposed to give me a second chance but he did. That was a long time ago.

No worries. Just answer "no" on 18n and move on. Others will jump in screaming you ought not lie, yada yada yada. If it was a one and done, move on and enjoy flight lessons.

My first AME was very old-school. The exam was in his house; he had me pee into a drinking cup (I assume one he didn't use) and then dipped it in front of me.

Young women (and women in general) are often false positive for protein in the urine because of trace amounts of menstrual blood or normal vaginal secretions. That's why it's especially important for women to clean the urethral meatus (the place where pee comes out) well and pee a little first to flush away any residue before collecting the same (so-called "midstream sample" or "clean catch"). Of course, being well-hydrated helps too.

I need some advice and guidance from Dr. Bruce Chien about my medical. Please help.
