The original "I don't know it all" of aviation.
We frequently get to see World War II warbirds fly at various air shows. But rarely do you get to watch a World War One aircraft in flying condition operate.

Today at Kickapoo airport in Wichita Falls, I got to watch a Curtis Jenny in action. Well taken care of and wonderful to watch fly. The honored passenger was Air Force Colonel Lance Bunch, commander of the training wing at Sheppard AFB. This guy is used to F15s and T38s and supersonic flight and now had to tangle with something that doesn't get much above 80MPH. But he must have liked it and had a massive grin on his face when he landed.

I'll have photos posted once I download them. I also shot some video.

It was a great day to be out aviating and a treat to see a well preserved piece of flying history.

Jennys are great. I think there's some good footage of them early on in Jimmy Stewart's Spirit Of St Louis, stalling up over barns and such.

"The Great Waldo Pepper" for lots of great Jenny footage - all of it real.

I was in Kickapoo last week. Nice to hear that the Jenny was flying.

It great to see these old machines flying. We are fortunate to have folks dedicate their time, effort (and money) to keep these aircraft in the air so they can still be seen and heard by the rest of us.
There is a great blog on a Jenny restoration in GA which looks pretty close to "finished" and provides some insight on the amount of work involved (the entries start in June 2006). It also has quite a few period photos and interesting info.

That engine turned cowl and brass radiator housing makes it the most distinctive Jenny I've seen pix of yet.

I got to see the Jenny fly a few years ago at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome.

ORA is a must-see for anyone in the area!
