I don't fly much VFR as I normally file and try to be above local traffic. From my Navy days, I like to plan and execute flights, try to fly economically and be professional at all times. 17 years ago we started using the Mooney to fly to Asheville as its an easy CXCC. We bought and own a home 12 miles west of the city. I eventually wanted to get up there faster, higher and more comfortably so I got a Meridian. WOW! instead of 3 +15 the trip was 2 +20 and my wife was not complaining as much. Then I went nuts and thought I could economically operate a Citation. I got the right plane. A 501SP Eagle Edition with the long wing, extra fuel and 9 seats. My best to Asheville was 1 + 45 - but $1500 each way in kerosene can be draining. I was lucky that I had no engine issues, but an old airframe is always troublesome. It was sad to see it go.
I decided 6 months ago that I would get back in the saddle and get up to speed. I completed Sporty's IFR refresher, got my butt over the flight surgeon and took a "cold" bi-annual check ride in a 172 at SUA. An acquaintance at F45 has a 172Q with a 160 hp engine and it is loaded with gadgets. He is a long time instructor and a bit of a hard ass (Former Navy Chief and aircrew). He bludgeoned me into shape. Made me do stuff I had not down since I got my commercial in 1973. Demanded that I only use VORs and forced me to get my head around vor nav. My scan is back to speed and I feel well oriented. But 100 Kt is not conducive to taking CXCCs.
