    Frustrations of a CFI

A habit I started early on in my training was to get to the airport so that I was cranking over the engine at the start of our block time. In order to do that I had to figure out how much time I needed to preflight, calculate aircraft performance, check weather, etc. If all of that took an hour...

    I know - it's just me...

Student Pilot here, the above is a part of my chair flying drills.

Flew Long Solo Cross Country Yesterday

Still learning cross country procedures and flight planning here so I really enjoyed your write-up. Congratulations! It sounds as though you had a good time.

What was the most unpleasant part of training for you?

Flight Planning. Stalls, VORs, Radio Communications all of that was easy peasy for me but Flight Planning has been rough. I think it is the bringing together of a lot of different concepts that makes it difficult...for me anyway.

    Fear of fall?

You're gonna love stalls. :) As others said the fear of falling is not uncommon. I fly around mountains and 10,000+ feet in a 172 sometimes gets to me as well. This is a really good idea. Even without power an airplane will not "fall" out of the sky. Glide out of the sky, yes but fall, no.

    Frustrated - crappy dam!n weather!

There is a reason why we go outside to look at and smell the rain...it is such a rare occurrence here. FWIW I graduated from NAU in '91...the summer weather in Flagstaff was great.

    getting frustrated!

Chair Fly. No it isn't the same as being in the air but it will help keep your skills from degrading. Leading up to my solo I had quite a few set-backs as well. It was very frustrating, I totally understand how you feel. Using Chair Flying at least I did not feel as though I was going backwards...

    Possible Solo Jitters...

The same for me, I really liked not having my instructor there. The one thing I did have to keep telling myself was to Slow Down! I was so excited to actually solo I was bouncing all over checklist items. Force yourself to focus on what you were taught and what you know...you will be fine...

How much wind will you guys fly in?

Interesting you should post this topic CC. I recently failed my pre-solo prog check at KDVT because the crosswinds were just blowing me all over the place. Since then the instructor and me have been focusing a lot of time and attention to crosswind landings.

How many hours it take you to solo?

"I'm the slowpoke. Busy class d and lots of gaps in training..." About the same here. I get close and then life starts throwing curve balls. Like the chest infection that has had me in bed for a week, but we have had a death in the family so I have to get out of bed and deal with that... It...

    suggestions on how to pay.

That is not even full-time work at minimum wage. Do yourself a favor and forget Physics. Go to a trade school and learn Plumbing. Before long you will be making enough to afford flying. No offense intended to those who are/were Physics majors.

    Piper Archer Checkout

AZPilot: Thank you for this thread. I am a student pilot flying out of Deer Valley in 172s. The 172s are fine airplanes but I would also like to try out the Archer. Joining "Phoenix Flyers" was just too much for what I wanted to do. Please let us know how things work out for you. I have book...

    Talking to ATC

Hello CC! I hope some training options are opening up for you. WestWind seems to be as busy as always. +1. I did this and for a while my instructor had to know when to come to my rescue! It helps to rehearse what you are going to say just before you press that transmit button. As others...

    Should I buy a parachute?

True. However now you are wearing a flight helmet, you know, in case the new plexiglass canopy you have to install does not get out of the way in time. Or I suppose you could go the F-111 route and eject downward (or is that the B-52 I am thinking of?) Or you could buy a Cirrus. :)

    Should I buy a parachute?

Well people have been known to be hit by golf balls so the OP would have to wear a suit of armor to protect himself from that possibility. It might affect his swing just a tad but he would be safe from ball strikes. On a more serious, different note: I once had the privilege to walk through a...
