Optimum altitude for crusing small aircraft

Yes do not worry, this is just one small point in the overwhelming matrix of mixture, IAS/TAS difference, winds aloft, turbulence, inversions, fuel to climb, weight reduction as fuel is burned, weight, short or long distance, comfort of passenger, etc...etc... One small tidbit that "engine...

Optimum altitude for crusing small aircraft

OK not the best question but I now have the answer. Was not looking for winds aloft, fuel to climb, inversions, terrain, etc. These are somewhat obvious for any CFI. Was looking for basic characteristics of the engine SPECIFIC RANGE = NM/fuel burn. Thanks to Jane Carpenter Cessna Chart and Rick...

Optimum altitude for crusing small aircraft

In the process of creating a performance video for entry level students for small fixed pitch reciprocating engines. Stuck with trying to determine the optimum altitude for best cruise performance. Yes, best angle of attack for best l/d is obvious and as altitude goes up, TAS increases, and...

Soon Sport Pilots with drivers license eligibility will be able to fly most light aircraft.

I would agree since all the heavy lifting is done. None of the classic aircraft made the change. Note there plenty of heavy “Sport Pilots” also. Not every Sport Pilot is light.

CFI expired, reinstatement needed, outfit recommendations?

I have done a number of sport pilot CFI checkrides in Light Sport Aircraft that reinstate all CFI ratings. Easier since only sport pilot maneuvers required but harder since you have to learn all the sport pilot, CFIS and LSA regulations/procedures.

What ever MOSAIC comes out, and there will be something coming out soon/eventually, will be just like the last LSA rules. Any aircraft, (probably a 150 and possibly a 172), if it fits the new definition of a LSA, it will be a LSA. Just like a j3 cub meets the definition now. See FAR part 1.1...

yes I plan to upgrade the weight of my sling 2 when the new updated weight happens

    Cessna 120A

The original 1232 weight was when the FAA thought LSA were going to look like a two place ultralight with fabric wings, wire bracing and two stroke engines. The industry had a different idea and here we are.

    Cessna 120A

Agreed. This is true. However, the aircraft buyer is simply looking at the new costs. I know many who are looking at a new $150,000 LSA and not one who is looking at a new $450,000 Cessna 172. Yes some are considering an old beat up Cessna but after looking most want a modern LSA. As great as...

Soon Sport Pilots with drivers license eligibility will be able to fly most light aircraft.

With all this stuff floating around about the new LSA MOSIAC making Light-sport aircraft faster with bigger payloads, NOTHING is being said about the pilots to fly them. It is my understanding from the FAA that all sport pilots will be able to be trained and fly them with the same minimum 20...

    Cessna 120A

With all due respect....... Old Cessnas are not competing with new LSA. Trying to compare a new top of the line LSA $150,000 aircraft with an old post WW2 Cessna is not a valid comparison. If you want a valid comparison compare the $150,000 new LSA to a new Cessna 172 that are selling at 3...

Roger that. BUT it is a requirement and the deadline is 2023. We will look back to this post and I/we/them Hero or a Zero we shall see. They have all the public comment and it is in he inner FAA private magic room now to be sprung on us.....

The big question is what will the industry look like when the new Light-Sport Aircraft rules are released in 2023. Probably the 172’s and many smaller Pipers will be included as LSA. Sport Pilots will be able to jump right into bigger airplanes and basic med will be needed by less. Interesting...

. Lucky you found out before you took the medical. A get people advised all the time they need a medical to fly with no alternatives. They essentially loose their ability to fly even as a sport pilot. Heartbreaking.
