    Safety comparisons to ground transport are specious. Peruse Kathryn's Reports once in a while for some perspective. If you fly enough, long enough you'll make mistakes, hopefully not lethal. Draw your own conclusions.

    I'm interested about your opinion now of the seat belt and harness - might they have functioned better or are you satisfied the outcome was as good as possible ? I ask because of my concern especially of the inertial reel belts in some of the planes I fly - seems they could be more robust.

    Pilots I fly with have their head in their laps, ipad with flightaware or whatever. Had a close call , head on not too long ago ... look out the dang window if you are vfr.

    I had a PPL student who already had his sailplane rating - he spoke of doing that, catching thermals which could provide a surprising amount of 'up time' for even a 152 ... never tried it myself, but would if I ever got back into GA.

    As a former GA pilot, I say that GA is indeed 'dead'. Many of the little airports are pretty much dead compared to a couple decades past. Of course, for the well-heeled, GA will probably never 'die' - but for the average middle class aspirant, it's much less attainable than not so long ago...
