    Grimes Rotating Beacon

I used LPS#1, which is supposed to lubricate, but not leave an oily film (which would attract dust). Regarding your beacon. IMHO, it is probably better to have a bad light than a bad motor... On my Grimes beacon - there was (1) +12V wire and (1) ground leading into the case. Taking the...

    return of deposit?

Bad move by the buyer to send a deposit without a written contract explicitly stating his/her options to back out of the deal. I wouldn't expect any money back. Never hurts to ask though...

    WTB Childsize Headsets

My kids have been using Softcomm 'Child Prince(s)' for a few years. It may sound hokey - but the color coding is probably the most important aspect of them, as the kids take pride in their own headset and like to wear it. A few flights, I have accidentally left one their headsets in the...

Interesting question about flyin amphib with SEL rating....

Interesting thread. I have wondered about this for quite some time. ...Years ago, just after 9/11, my homefield 3CK (lake in the hills, IL) was put under the O'Hare Bravo's 30nm IFR-only ring. Many pilots moved their planes to nearby airports further than 30nm away, including planes/pilots...

    Grimes Rotating Beacon

Hi All. The Grimes Rotating Beacon in the Cherokee had begun to spin very slowly (if at all). Plane is in for annual, so I decided to see what was wrong with the beacon. I hooked the beacon up to a 13.8VDC source with an ammeter in series and found that when stalled, the beacon was pulling...

    GPS basic questions

My 396 is connected to an ext input for the audio panel via 1/8" stereo patch cord. Many of the newer headset models have audio inputs, so you could run the patch cord from the GPS directly to the headset. On the downside, no one else on the plane could then listen to the music.

    Transponder Reco? (have RT-359A) NexGen?

This summer, I upgraded my ~30 years old narco AT50A to the pin-compatible AT165R/VS. As advertised, install took only a few minutes, and in the months since, the transponder has performed flawlessly. I would do it again in a heartbeat, and would recommend that you look into their AT165C or...

    Airlines - where to sit?

Emer Exit Row, then Aisle. Preferably not near a lavatory. And on an RJ or Super80, not near the back, although I really don't care that much about engine noise.

Selecting the RIGHT First Plane Purchase

1973 and later model PA28s actually have ok legroom (5" fuselage stretch), In fact, I don't think it is possible to fit 4 real adults in my '71 PA28-180. At least, without me running the seat fwd to an extremely uncomfortable setting. For a reference for the OP... useful load-wise, the...

Crazy medical office policy on FAA medicals

I had a similar situation over the Christmas holiday. My family and I visited my parents in my hometown. My daughter had a cold, and was complaining of ear pain. We called the urgent care facility in the (relatively small) town. It was 6:50, and they closed at 7pm. They assured us that if...

    Cost of ownership

Based in the mountains, or flying over them frequently? If not, I would choose the normally aspirated version. Price is the major reason... Factoryengines.com lists an overhaul/rebuild price of $30 - 35k for the normally aspirated version. $43-60k for the turbo'd version. Speedwise, I have...

    Changing computer motherboard

If you are trying to up your overall system reliability, I'd find a MOBO with onboard RAID, and get at least 2 HDDs. Storage is soooo cheap nowadays, it's almost a crime not to have RAID.

    Cirrus safety vs Mooney safety

Personally, I'd rather have the chute. It would decrease pucker factor when flying single engine across non-favorable terrain, or IMC in areas of LIFR. That said, mechanical trouble aside... the same kind of pilot who would get him/herself into trouble in an SR22 is likely the same kind of...
