    The Best IFR Hood

I've used it through commercial, CFII, and multi addon training, and have my students use it as well. A lot of guys call it the Chinese takeout box, but it's earned its fair share of fans, especially compared to the scratched up Foggles. I can tell when taking up a student in actual for the...

    Steam plus GPS

In the two types I fly with GPS, one has steam and a BendixKing KLN-89B, and the other steam and a Garmin 430W.

Can you part 61 private pilot, then part 141 instrument or commercial pilot?

The decision to go Part 141 vs Part 61 is per certificate/rating. So you can get your Private under Part 61, then enroll in a Part 141 Instrument course. Private requires 35 hours flight time, Instrument requires 35 hours hood/actual time (total time would be higher than 35 since you don't...

    Pitstops in NW FL?

I second this! Flew in for dinner one evening. The approach is beautiful, the runway makes a good challenge, and that seafood! :goofy:

    250nm XC requirement for IFR

Exactly. During the Instrument 250 you're not PIC if you're filed IFR - your CFII is. The long Commercial XC is done while acting as PIC, therefore it wouldn't work.

    250nm XC requirement for IFR

But the commercial 250 is completed while acting as PIC. You can't act as PIC on an IFR flight if you're not instrument rated.

    c172R climb performance

2100 RPM seems low for a 172R on climbout. 2400 RPM is red line, and at full power you should be close to it; 2300 is about normal.

    Two different printers of sectionals?

I love Duracharts! They're more durable and the image quality I find greater than the FAA printed charts, and with the CFI discount, they're half the cost of what I would pay at an FBO for the FAA printed ones.

    Reducing Hobbs/CFI time during training

I fly steam-gauge airplanes out of a towered airport with a single runway and a parallel taxiway with the ramp at the midpoint. At the beginning of the block, we may have anywhere from 5-10 airplanes leaving and arriving at once. My students take anywhere from 6-16 minutes from Hobbs ticking to...

    NASA Shuttle Landing Facility

When we went down to Florida touring the state, we simply asked approach if we could do a low approach at the Shuttle Landing Facility on our way to Titusville. NASA Tower was very accommodating and seemed to be happy to have someone to talk to. Cleared to fly over the runway no lower than 100'...

    That'd be great!

    Medical Exam Fees (Small Town)

    CFI pass rate

Failed first attempt. Looking back, rightfully so: my knowledge of the airplane wasn't as high as it should have been. After almost five months of retraining, maintenance issues, and weather/scheduling problems, passed with flying colors the second time.

just a thought on emergency briefing

I basically hit on seatbelts, door operation, emergency equipment, and environmentals/passenger comfort. Front seat occupants also get briefed on flight controls and how to not interfere with them. If there is a safety card (it comes with the newer Cessnas), I provide it for them. "Newer...

    BFR question

Passing a checkride or completing a phase of WINGS would reset the clock for your flight review. Tailwheel/Complex/High Performance/High Altitude endorsements and IPCs do not, however you can get the instructor to sign off your flight review as well if they agree to it. Flight reviews are...
