    CFI Renewal and The Shutdown

OK, guys. I've never had to renew my CFI before at the 24 month mark before, but I'm quickly coming up on mine in February. I'm asking for myself, but also on behalf of all the January guys. Does anybody know how CFI renewals are working with the shutdown? Can I submit it in IACRA and have...

    CFII and MEI

What is you just do your CFII and MEI training in the twin, then take the MEI check ride before the CFII check ride? That way you get your value-added PIC time, AND you don't have to get into a 1 circle flat scissors fight with the examiner before the oral even starts.

Can you not just feel the swiss cheese holes starting to line up?

Is it wise to do commercial without IFR?

This should be in the commercial oral exam prep book.

    Expensive airplanes have right-of-way

The clear answer here is that e'erbody needs to come full throttle into the overhead break, and get in line on downwind. Just don't get mad when someone breaks at the numbers and beats you in. That's tongue in cheek, but bottom line, the straight in is just as valid as the pattern. In fact...

    KEWN/KMRH/KOCW Partnership

I know this is a long shot to post here, but I know there is at least one other KEWN member here. Maybe I can get the juices flowing. I am looking to build a two person partnership in a cross country machine. The recent natural disasters here have totaled a lot of aircraft so I know there are...

    How Many Hours from a 172 to a 414?

I agree. He might also want to roll straight into his commercial ticket while he's at it. He'll need it for business, and it'll be another factor to drive down the insurance requirements which, let's face it, is what we're actually talking about here.

Secure, Cheap Tie-Down for Irma Bugout

Members of the board, Building my hurricane bug out plan just in case this Irma thing goes bad. I am babysitting my friend's Mooney in Eastern NC (EWN) because he's deployed right now. Planning for the worst right now, I'm thinking somewhere on the arc roughly around Charlotte, Greensboro...

    Engine Dies after Run-up

This was it. Cost $80 to diagnose and adjust. I'll take that over the muffler bearing any day. That's an expensive one.

    Engine Dies after Run-up

Gentlemen and Ladies of the Blue Site, 1965 Mooney M20E with original Lycoming IO-360-A1A. We all bring the throttle all the way to the idle stop at the end of the run-up to ensure it doesn't do something whacky (like die), but I always thought of the possibility more prevalent in a carbureted...

How do you keep yourself focused while flying?

In all seriousness though, take two weeks off. You're just dang tired of staring at stupid gauges and trying to do things perfectly the way you read about in a book. You've plateau'd. Take some time off.

How do you keep yourself focused while flying?

This exact same thing happens to me when my wife is talking to me. I find drinking about a beer and a half makes me much more attentive and engaging. You should try it.

    Who Needs An Air Force?

Quoted for (mostly) truth, and I'm a Marine. These are things that reside specifically in the Air Force institutionally. Some of them (strat lift), nobody wants to do. Let's also add aviation Command and Control to the list, especially. I would change "Deep Strike" to "Strategic Bombing"...

    Your Top Five Coolest Flights

No particular order: 1. 10 traps on the USS Dwight D Eisenhower. I've never had anything make me involuntarily giggle out loud like a cat shot. 2. Surprising my new bride after our wedding with a C-172SP flight from KVLD to KCRG to kick off our honeymoon. The back was LOADED with brand new...

    May fortune favor the foolish...

Welcome aboard BD. I can offer a little insight on pilot hiring. The legacies are not yet in a spot where you can write your RW time in to cover the FW turbine time requirements of most airlines (formally or informally 1000 hours. Formally or informally as PIC in some places, but this one is...
