depends. if im in someones airspace i ask. if im ifr yes duh. if im using flight following and the radios are quiet and im not near any busy airports ill change altitude without asking. if im using flight following and the radio traffic is high i will ask. 9/10 i hear "altitude your discretion"

i agree flying to placerville and turn right. you can also go to auburn, blue canyon, truckee then to south lake for a different way in. there is zero smoke up here right now and the weather is great..a little windy this week though. September is considered the best summer month in tahoe. Warm...

also if you head up the east side of the sierras, i recommend staying east of mammoth. basically vgt direct to hth.

if your going to stop in reno, stop just before at KMEV or KTRK. both have good little restaurants. just be very aware of density altitude at KTRK. typically after 2pm i wont take off out of truckee since DA can easily get to 9k feet. it is starting to cool off though.
