    Verifying runway crossing clearance

Jnmeade, Fortunately, at O'Hare, one rarely has to cross a runway to get to their active, so pretty much a non issue... even when I flew my Bonanza in there. However, I have no problem verifying a crossing in any plane, at any airport, if there's the absolute slightest doubt. (and that's...

    Garmin 496 frozen

Dan, Call Garmin tech support... there "may" be a way to reset, but not optimistic, you'll probably have to send it back for repair at their ~$350 flat rate price, like I did with the 396 recently.

Anyone flown out of Key West/EYW?

FWIW, Key West is like any other airport, excepting the proximity to the Air Force Base, but easy in and out. Bring your wallet, they are not cheap. Controllers are fine, no issues. Been there a few times this year. However, a flight up the keys to a lunch stop at Sugar Loaf or Marathon...

    Old airlines, the old ways

Jay, Yes, airlines are a loosing proposition... and if one looks at the profit and loss, if you tally up the whole thing since the Wright Brothers, there has been a loss, prior to 9-11.... and after 9-11 the loss was again as much as all time for the airlines. Folks really do not know how to...

    Trunkers

Jhausch, Why fight it... just choose your mechanic, and who cares if a trunker provides a service to aircraft owners. And who cares about insurance? If you do, then ask for it, you are not obligated to do business with anyone and that's YOUR choice.... there's no law in not having...

    Trunkers

Absolutely! This country is for free enterprise. The trunkers offer some advantages and the business that are established there have some advantages, too. Give a percent to the airport and insurance has NOTHING to do with providing a service, unless the customer requires it. Have at it!

Turn Around On Take Off After Engine Out.

First, the idea of briefing every take off is spot on... have a plan. Second, if you're going to attempt a turn back of any kind, know the plane and practice the maneuver... and add a comfortable margin.

How hard to pull - a scenario

Jay, I can't imagine ever getting in this situation to start with... so my answer would be to avoid this situation all together. But yes, you can calculate it... but a moot point. If you had the time to calculate it, you should have been calculating how to avoid it in the first place.

Pilots using the iPad in the cockpit

FWIW, I'm a die hard IPad user and have been paperless for ~6 years or better. My first PC solution (Motion) was a PITA, but worked for the most part but not without a lot of rebooting, reloading and futzing. The IPad solves the problem without the hassle. Works well and does the job...

Trying to navigate (VFR) the north Florida morass...

Dan, First of all, you guys do a great job, and I've never had a problem going thru your area, and you've always been helpful. A tribute, compared to some other facilities. But, one may never get to Cairns, if they follow the coast, and the controllers down there thru Eglin area and over...

When Not to Aim for the Numbers

Read the language, there is an option if it is not a stabilized approach, so what do you call it?
