First plane? Archer, Arrow, etc. any recommendations

Loved my arrow. It was 1975 Hershey bar wing. Solid honest 135knt plane easy to fly and maintain. Like what’s been said, insurance and annual will be 1000 more than an archer, but you build complex time! The arrow is nice and steady during instrument approaches too.

Good place to find quotes on insurance before deciding on a plane?

Yeah I went through that when I bought mine. Apparently you need to use a broker, which I didn’t understand at the time. I used avemco the first year and they were easy and responsive. They were fairly pricy though. Since then I used Kale at American Safeguard, and he has provided better rates.

First plane for family of 5

I think that would be a fine family plane as would an A36. I would strongly suggest getting your IFR before buying a cross country machine like that. It helps with insurance and overall experience. Proficiency and experience is key when flying your family around, plus you can’t always predict...

    Endorsement

I believe this is for insurance purposes only. As far as the fars are concerned, I think they are both single engine land airplanes with fixed gear/prop and less than 200hp.

    Propeller Overhaul Anywhere, Anytime

My shop swears by Tiffin Aire in Ohio. I just had mine resealed / repaired there. I can report back after I get some time on it. Their service was fast and on time. Better than I can say for the altimeter work I had done at a big avionics place.

    Cheap airplane not so cheap

I got a good deal on mine. I knew what I was getting into as the owner was upfront about the tbo engine needing replacement and the results of a very thorough prebuy inspection. It has been a great plane with just a few minor surprises.

    Help me understand Turbo

I was thinking about this before I bought my plane. I think if you will be at higher density altitudes a fair amount, the turbo makes a lot of sense. I am in the midwest, so other than the occasional trip out west, I wouldn't really be taking advantage of a turbo. Most of the time I just putz...

How liquid is a partnership / why don't I see shares for sale?

My guess is that people usually would partner with people they know. As an aircraft owner myself, I would be uncomfortable advertising for a stranger to come fly my plane. I think the key is to network and meet people at the airport, on forums, local fly ins, etc. I know in the flying club I...

    First aviation headset- choice?

The Lightspeed Sierra has served me well for many years. It is around $500 price point with bluetooth and active noise cancellation. Also if you have any issues, Lightspeed will take care of you.

How much do you spend monthly/annually on flying

I figured this out recently. I spend about 2k per month all in if I fly 100 hours a year and nothing major breaks. That does not include any debt service.

    Hershey bar wings and landing

Interestingly, I was in an arrow partnership for several years. It had the Hershey bar wings, and I loved landing it. When I moved and started flying an arrow with the tapered wing, I swear it was impossible to grease it. It is probably more about getting comfortable with one vs. another than...

    Oxygen systems

I had the same thought on the high flying c172. I bought an AirOx for my family trip to AZ over spring break. It worked great for what we used it for. We didn't go too high, but it was warm and I wanted the family to be comfortable. We were up at 10500 and had 4 of us on a D size tank. It is...

    Expanding a Flying Club

While I'm not sure of the specifics of your club arrangement, I can tell you about my experience. I am in a club of 90 people with about 50 active. They claim to have a waiting list of 40 people. We have 4 planes and availability isn't great. If you schedule a week ahead of time and are only...

    Daily Pic

Just finished a big cross country with the family Chicago to Phoenix and back. This was taken yesterday morning in Wichita.
