    Good data backup software

You might try something like Duplicati, that's what I use. Pretty easy to tell it what to backup and it does incremental backup, version control, etc. Honestly too fancy for what I need, but it's been so seamless and just works without me needing to intervene, so I stick with it.

Provide ATIS code to ground for taxiback?

I got asked that once, I just assumed they did it out of habit. It wasn't a run-of-the-mill taxi either as we were aborting after issues in run up. I just acknowledged I had it. If it wasn't busy that day I may have joked with them.

    Office 365

If you're a light user of just Excel and Word type stuff, I'd just go to OpenOffice or LibreOffice. There was a learning curve, but I keep a ton of spreadsheets in LibreOffice Calc now and I'm to the point it's not even an inconvenience to me anymore. You can buy "Office Home and Student" for...

Are there pilots who've never used paper maps?

I learned all on paper and I just finished a year ago. The school I went to was old school and wanted everything done on paper. I'm not sure it was a bad idea, but I've also not used really at all since.

Starting back to training - Insurance question

You might ask your flight school or whoever you will be renting planes from if they have a requirement. Mine has different minimum aircraft damage requirements depending on what aircraft you wish to fly in. I've been training in a C152 so I kept that limit low for now, but once I finish my...

Talk me out of a Grumman AA1B

I'll be watching for opinions as I'm having similar thoughts in a similar position. I'm not building hours for a career, but being able to go away for a few days on a whim and enjoy a short XC is why I want to learn to begin with. Just don't want to set myself up in too much plane with things...

Going Far VFR: Coast to Coast in a Glasair

Sweet you saw Fifi! She flew over my old house really low several years ago when pilot training was more of a pipe dream. That is the most loud and imposing aircraft I ever had come over the house, and I'd had a good assortment of fighter jets flyover there. I couldn't imagine being on the...

Going Far VFR: Coast to Coast in a Glasair

Yeah, I'd for sure be talking it with a CFI ahead of time. For me, 110F temps aren't a surprise and lately have certainly been getting used to weather and thunderstorms. Trees? Yeah I'm going to need some experience there. Or water. Flying from mainland to Ocracoke would be by far the most...

Going Far VFR: Coast to Coast in a Glasair

Nice trip! I've been contemplating trying to do half of this next year and going to the Outer Banks. Only half for me as I don't live on the opposite coast. How low time are you if you don't mind? I'm a bit concerned about biting off too much as I'm an almost-complete student now, I'd most...

    Gender Reveal Party

Pretty much. I remember I learned about it from my boss at work. He had gone to one of those management seminar things, and apparently I was a "millennial". No effing idea what he was talking about. I'm ten years into my career at that point. I told him he can save all the BS they were...

IFR Training - instructor and plane options

With respect to military pilots, my regular (GA-background) CFI had something come up last minute when I was already halfway through pre-flight. There's a military pilot CFI part time at my flight school who happened to be in and had free time, so I ended up flying with him. It was a great...
