One of the reasons we do travel to the sites ourselves is so we don't have to deal with shipping the samples back (they are temperature-sensitive, so need to be shipped with cold packs in a cooler).

I suppose I've never really thought about who "owns" the water samples. I work for a state agency, and the samples are collected from public municipal systems (we don't "buy" the water samples from them, which would be silly anyway, as, based on water prices, would cost less than $0.001 of water...
