Need opinions of Nexrad on a Garmin 496

Speaking of Garmin 396/496XM and all other fine Garmin Avionics, did anyone know Jerry Smith, Garmin Regional Sales Manager. He died last week while enroute to Mena, AR (MEZ). He crashed near Rich Mountain which is a few miles NW of Mena. Jerry was flying his own Cessna 177 which had Garmins...

Need opinions of Nexrad on a Garmin 496

I agree with all of the prior post but would like to add, the 396/496 with XM WX are only a resource for planning. I wouldn't fly(bet my life) in solid IMC with only a 396/496XM while trying to deviate around cells. Advance planning using the 396/496XM to avoid WX is OK if you remain far enough...

    Flying to Florida

Hi, Very close, We did, what is known in the industry, a Polar route. We came within 100 NM of the North Pole, flew over the Artic Ocean, over Russia. Communication is done via HF or Sat Com (if equipped). Flight Time was 14 hours and 57 minutes. Have a great day, Captain JC

    Flying to Florida

    Flying to Florida

Hi, The FAA has advised their ATC controllers to report ALL deviations which exceed the FAA IFR regs. I don't know if they are all doing it but I would be very wary. This has been mentioned in several GA publications. Until my recent retirement from a major airline, I served on the ALPA Air...

    Flying to Florida

Hi, Your route looks fine. Just make sure you know how to handle all the airspace such as C and B , you will be flying in or close to. If you have good WX, why are you going IFR? Do good flight planning and use flight following and enjoy. The FAA is currently on a rant about deviations!! Flying...
