So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Cessna 172 round gauge. They have a Cardinal that they have lower daily minimums on that I might get my complex in and use for trips too. Lots of things to think about now.

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

The next flight I did was to get from Peter O Knight (KTPF) to Winter Haven (KGIF) for my checkride. My school doesn't let students take the maintenance records when solo so I had the instructor along for the flight. We REALLY struggled with IACRA and the application that morning and I also...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Well let me start this off with saying I did 3 flights before my checkride. First was .3 hours because the weather was reported 10,000 overcast but the ASOS wasn't picking up the SCT to BKN 1,000 foot layer and I couldn't see it from the ground either because it blended into the overcast layer...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

So my checkride is officially scheduled for July 11th! Time to break out the books again and re-refresh on the material...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Lastly did a flight today to get my 0.2 hours of simulated instrument I needed and practice some turning stalls. Those are much different than straight ahead and I struggled with fighting the natural urge too use aileron to lift the low wing. I highly encourage anyone who hasn't done turning...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Third flight was a quick solo on the pattern to freshen up on short and soft field landings. I nailed every one of them. 0.5 hours for a total of 41.7

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Next flight was a solo cross country to make sure I met the minimums that the DPE would like to see. It was very windy and my instructor was tempted to call it off but allowed me to go after I told him I was comfortable with it and had flown in similar winds. Cross country from KTPF (Peter O...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

I have a few updates here in this post. My wife is pregnant and between that, work, and flying I didn't really get to update my progress here. After a couple of weather delays I did finally get to do a mock checkride and it went well. Planned to fly to 28J from KTPF and my instructor was happy...

    Cedar Key

CDK is awesome! I went there on my long solo cross country during my PPL training. It's really not that short. Plenty long enough for any trainer provided you don't carry too much speed. When I landed the ramp was over full and my school doesn't allow grass operations with the wheel pants...

    Life Insurance

Try Haven life They would not underwrite me as a student pilot but said that they would with a small additional premium after completing my license. For reference: I'm 29 and healthy. The quoted premium for a $1,000,000 term policy for 20 years was about $35 a month. They have no exclusions...

    BasicMed

To me that's way too much detail. I just sent my doc a quick email that said: I'm a pilot and recently the FAA changed their medical standards and now allow our normal physicians to do a health evaluation for us. Here's a link to the required checklist with instructions: Is this something you...

BasicMed checklist and online course now available

As another point of reference: I contacted my primary care physician and sent them a copy of the form and asked if he would have any issue completing it as a part of my annual physical. His response was that he reviewed it and would have no issue filling it out and signing it. I'm scheduled for...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

I don't think my CFI had used this DPE before. It was the chief CFI that knew about this. My CFI has moved on to Piedmont right as I was getting prepped for the checkride. I knew that would happen as well.

Acceptable margin for error in navigation, tests

The chief instructor at my school told me this exactly this weekend during our mock oral. He said that the DPE he has been using not only is okay with modern technology but she encourages it! I'm fully comfortable planning a flight on paper manually but will be using Foreflight for my checkride...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Fully agree with not fighting it. I just wasn't sure if it was common. I don't mind the actual flight, but like anything else I would rather spend the money on something useful like a lunch run with wife. We have 3-4 airports in that 51-55 nm range so it's not a problem.
