charging dual rates for solo flights?

The school I used to teach at required the CFI to be present and actively tracking the student who was required to be on flight following at all times. By actively monitoring, I mean being expected to call approach/center and ask them to relay instructions if the student exceeded school...

    IFR and Bravo

East-West is no problem. I flew there all summer, every day, multiple times/day was cleared across midfield at 5000 (both ways). Only once in probably close to 200 flights did we have to go around. North-South, on the other hand, I will agree with you 100%, never had to go outside the limits...

ATC makes mistakes and I get reported

Judging by your story, I would suggest you take careful notes of the good information the others have provided on your airmanship, delete this thread, and go on your merry way. Possibly seek out the services of a competent CFI.

    Preflight Gloves

I am exactly the opposite. I worked as a mechanic all through school and did it as a side hustle for another 10 years and never wore gloves. Now that I'm "respectable", I always wear HD nitrile when I get to wrench on something. It took years to sluff-off the stains caused by years of...

    Preflight Gloves

I know at least in the Army, pilots are required to use preflight gloves which are different from flight gloves as any contamination of the nomex makes it pretty useless. I usually only use them if it's cold.

    MEI Question

I'm sorry if I came across as personally insulting, not my intent. This is one of those downwind turn or cruising on the step things which have been re-hashed many times on many forums and there will never be a consensus. I was wrong to be flippant, it wasn't towards you personally. I teach in a...

    MEI Question

Sometimes, whenever this comes up, I wonder if people are just bored at home and want to start a dumpster fire for fun.

Chattanooga KCHA Last Week of May

I will add another voice of strong recommendation to land to the south at FGU if you've never been there unless the winds are really favorable otherwise; I've landed to the south with an 8-knot tailwind and had to add a good bit of power on the roll out to make it to the FBO. FGU is behind a...

    Best path to commercial license?

Show me somewhere you get a plane and instructor for $80. You're a gold seal, what is the average actual logged time at each checkride? It ain't the book minimum. To get to CFI, CFII, AND MEI, which is what the puppy mills give you for the cost, 350 hours is a good estimate. The thing about...

    TKM MX170C or KX155?

Something I haven't seen pop up here, but are you 2020 compliant? If you try to sell the plane without some sort of compliance, you're going to take a $10k hit on value. It's an easy, legit bargaining chip and no matter how many sworn afidavits you have verifying the beauty of your wiring, no...

    High Altitude Endorsement

I got mine in a Cheyenne II at KHSV. They rent it(!) for $400/hr dry, so it ends up right around $700/hr wet.

    Best path to commercial license?

You might be surprised by the minimums required for pipeline patrol. One of the biggest players in the game requires 1500 hours. If you do the math, that $70k equates to 350 hours at an average of $200/hour, which is about right. It is possible to buy a plane and save some money, but it is very...

I now hate Fedex more than I hate the post office!

I am a big fan of FedEX EXPRESS, Ground is OK, but seems to be more regional in quality. My UPS driver won't go anywhere near the locked steel door which hides my 1-eyed, crippled, 17 year-old, 14 lb rat terrier so he likes to leave boxes in the rain. FedEX driver will go around back to the dog...

    DC-9 Data Plates

I believe the type rating listed on a pilot certificate also still says DC-9 for all of those planes.

    flying to disneyland

Years ago there was a Flying or Plane&Pilot story by a former Ameriflight guy who flew Lances or Saratogas, some PA-32 through Banning every day and wore a football helmet to keep from getting knocked silly. If I remember correctly, he even attributes the death of his successor to not wearing a...
