Plane in wires near KGAI (Montgomery County, MD)

ATC to pilot ... "After approach, what are your intensions?" I think the first thing the NTSB will ask is if the pilot was current ... BTW, Foreflight shows obstacles very easily.

Garmin GNC 355 and CDI Scale setting - all the time

The default is AUTO which in the approach environment downshifts to 0.3 anyway where intercepting arcs, radials and LOC are mostly done. So that's not right. Essentially a permanent 0.3 setting would apply to the enroute and terminal environments as well which are 2nm and 1nm scales by default...

Garmin GNC 355 and CDI Scale setting - all the time

I am curious to know if others set the CDI scale on their Garmin GPS equipment to the 0.3nm setting and leave it there. I used to do this on my old (non-IFR)250XL and it drove my old Century autopilot much more accurately. I know it can autoscale up to a 2nm deflection but I don't fly that...

Bold line on RNAV vs ILS

Well, that is what I thought before I started reading this post but its gotten kind of convoluted and perhaps I misread that someone said it wasn't. I'm upright again now.

Bold line on RNAV vs ILS

OK. Thanks. So for the PRB RNAV 19 approach the CHVAL, MBARI and FIKDU fixes specify NOPT. And since the HOVLI is unmarked the hold isn't required there either. So a HOLD is not required by default for any entry point for this procedure. What do they even have to say NOPT anywhere on the chart...

Bold line on RNAV vs ILS

Can someone help me with the difference between a HILPT and a PT and why we would see one over the other and how we need to treat each of them differently? I'm not quite following this.

Just quoting above from someone who lives there. Sounds to me like the place to be if your in the air. On the ground maybe its somewhere else.

Yes, Yes, the T routes are in our area as well (PHL-NYC) but they are not all that numerous. As mentioned it seems they are sticking with many of the past patterns of Victor Airways here. It seems logical that when traffic is as dense as it is here that these old routes may be the best ways to...

It is very cool that my changes in Foreflight for these codes carry across to my backup iPad and phone automatically.

Thanks for those clarifications. I do need to change mine then: SD/EB2 (GTX345)

I'm aware of that. However, I make a note in my flight plan that I am "VFR GPS equipped". My equipment code spec does not include GPS. I've had a couple of ATC controllers on IFR flights ask if I would accept a direct-to waypoint. One was on a routing deviation (NY area) even though he knew how...

Philly, New York. I hit the jackpot. No wonder I haven't needed a GPS. If I get one I'll probably fly the same VOR routing.

OK. I live in the Philly area (not proud of it). I'm sympathetic. I get ridiculous routing from West Chester PA (near BUNTS) to mid Long Island. However - good to know DIRECT routing works elsewhere.

So its a trial by experimentation process. I guess I've already done a good deal of that requesting VOR shortcuts, etc. A lot of times I will get routed to a GPS waypoint and if I am IFR in VFR conditions I'll take it and crank into my VFR GPS. That's never caused me problems. It looks like...
