6'3", Student Pilot, Colorado, Looking to purchase...

The bigger(than RV12) 2 seat Van's are a good choice, too. My airport is at 7500 MSL with several mtn passes at 13k ft nearby. I had a Grumman Tiger that just did not climb well at all here. I bought an RV9A with 20 less hp than the Grumman but far better high altitude performance. Much faster...

Should I not own if I can’t find hangar space?

This topic has been covered many times and everyone has different opinions. IMO, hangars are great if you can find one at your preferred home base and it is not so expensive that it curtails your flying activities. My twin brother and I learned to fly in Alaska when we were 16. We soon found...

Airbus 320 loses large piece of elevator

Democratic Republic of the Congo - Airbus A320 loses large piece of its left elevator shortly after takeoff. Crew elects to continue to destination...? Over 500 NM. Flight was completed successfully. https://simpleflying.com/caa-airbus-a320-lose-elevator-part-departure/

    Aviation Writer Richard Collins

I enjoyed his columns and articles greatly. He had a "just the facts" writing style. The airplane and the mission were always the focus and thoroughly documented. He seemed to have much less ego than most aviation writers. He showed - by example - what was possible using light single piston...

Thinking About Hanging Up My Spurs

A few years ago, I was in a similar boat as the OP. I co-owned a C185 with my brother in Alaska but was moving to the lower 48. I sold my 50% of the airplane to him. Very bad timing... the airplane has more than doubled in value since :). I thought- I'm getting older(late 50's at that time)...

Engine / Constant speed prop operation

The answer is poorly written IMO, but not incorrect. Since the propeller and engine crankshaft are bolted together they always turn at the same rpm.

I need a new ELT, which one do I get?

No, I had it installed by my mechanic. Very simple install. Bracket for ELT mounted to airframe in cargo area (oriented correctly), short coax run to the antenna, and remote head mounted in armrest. No external GPS connection.

I need a new ELT, which one do I get?

I have an ACK 04. Installed about 18 months now. 2 false activations so far... called ACK for advice. They said they needed detailed photos of my install, lots of other info before they could begin to assist me... decided to wait for the next false activation. :)

    X-C Plane Selection Advice

That's what I did - bought an RV9A. I had a Tiger prior to that but it didn't do high altitude really well. I live in the mountain west, my homebase is well above 7000 msl. I have owned several airplanes over the years- Citabrias, Scouts, Cessna 310, C185, Super Viking, Tiger, floatplanes...

    Training after solo

It was 5.4 hours for me in 1977. In a 150 hp Citabria. Small town in Alaska. Uncontrolled field. But I'm sure students today are exposed to many more procedures before solo.

Upgrading to a better aircraft a bad thing?

Exactly. I learned to fly at 16, in a Citabria I bought with my brother. We parked it outside on a gravel tiedown in Soldotna, Alaska. 99% of the local hangars at that time were used for aircraft maintenance, not storage. I was based there from 1977 through 2010, owning 8 aircraft including...

Upgrading to a better aircraft a bad thing?

A young co-worker/friend recently (3 years ago) bought a C150 to get his PPL. He was in a long-term "partnership" with his dad to build a 4 place experimental but that was taking years and even when complete it probably would not have been the best trainer. My friend loved his C150. Got his...
