Mile High Club in actual IFR without autopilot, is it doable?

Thanks everyone for the help! We especially like the suggestion to first try it over water on a moonless night while in VMC, before taking the plunge and going for it in IMC since I'll have a much better idea as to how well I can hold an altitude and heading without being on an IFR flight...

Mile High Club in actual IFR without autopilot, is it doable?

With all due respect, I think you guys really are overly concerned about this being truly dangerous vs something that just has a slightly higher risk. With reactions like this, you would think that what I am wanting to do is just as bad on the transgression scale as flying drunk. IMHO...

Mile High Club in actual IFR without autopilot, is it doable?

You HAVE to be joking! You really think it counts for more on an airliner vs in your own A/C while acting as PIC????? Really? Furthermore, do you really think its foolhardy to join while acting as PIC, even in day VFR conditions? While it certainly is slightly more risky joining even in...

Mile High Club in actual IFR without autopilot, is it doable?

Even though I'm not multi rated, please don't give me ideas:D Any half competent pilot should be able to safely attain membership in day VFR conditions without an AP. That's not dangerous at all, since by definition you must be at 5280 AGL or higher-----plenty high to react to the...

Mile High Club in actual IFR without autopilot, is it doable?

Nope! I'm only 37 Nah…… Its just about minimizing the risk. If I really felt invulnerable, I would not have sought advice on this forum. Surely, this is not any more dangerous than crop-dusting or ferrying a piston single across the cold North Atlantic, is it?

Mile High Club in actual IFR without autopilot, is it doable?

Where I'm based out of, the highest terrain is around 500 MSL, so it certainly qualifies with the sticklers strict definition. Are you being sincere or sarcastic? Honest question. Close enough, but who can ever hand fly while holding an exact altitude anyway, even on a normal flight?

    Well……..she is 5'2 and weighs 117 lbs. I hope that helps:lol:

Mile High Club in actual IFR without autopilot, is it doable?

Yea……I've seen that particular NTSB report floated around a million times, but the fact that that's the only one in the past 30 years makes me think that pilots are doing a very good job at doing it safely. Think how many accidents on the other hand over that same period caused by ice...

Mile High Club in actual IFR without autopilot, is it doable?

I'm going to try to keep this PG rated. I've already joined the MHC with my wife (Cessna 172--no autopilot in case Henning was wondering:goofy:) on an almost perfect VFR day, and while it was a great thrill for both of us of course---I am now looking to do something similar, but more...

    Trip home

Becky, All I can for sure is that 99% of the time, fear is due to ignorance. Perfect example: WHen I was 10 yrs old my father had a serious embolism when learning scuba diving (a complete d!ck of a dive instructor contribuled to it BTW) when he panicked, held his breath, and shot to the...

    Trip home

You ever have to go when on an airliner in solid moderate turb with the SB sign is illuminated for 20-30 min? Not any more fun than having to answer nature's call in a GA aircraft where the nearest airport is rarely more than 10-15 min flying time away. Never a big deal (and I've flown a...

    Continue the Approach?

You guys do realize that very heavy rain doesn't necessarily mean a rouge ride. If there is a shallow gradient from green to yellow to red, it usually means the worst that will happen is the water will chip off the paint. I once flew through an area of orange (40-45 dbz) on the Nexrad and...

My Girlfriend is Ruining My Life

Exactly, I would have told my boss that I was going regardless (since HE was the one who broke promise) and then let the chips fall where they may. If he/she fired me, I can still find work easily through my network of friends---and lets put it this way......if he would fire me over...
