Shake down flight to ferry flight

Being in the engine business for many years this came up numerous times. I did the local test flights on ferry permits to a destination usually for annual inspection. One of my FAA PMI's suggested it by asking what I would do if I had to make an adjustment or inspect something! I once cut 3...

    Lycoming O-435

Central Cylinder would be my first choice followed by G&N ! In my 25 years in the engine business I do not recall ever seeing an O-435-C. A few GO-435,GO-480,IGO-540,IGSO-480;IGSO-540 and a bunch of VO variants from helicopters went though Mattituck.

    High Oil Temp

I flew a bunch of Aztecs with the right cowl flaps in trail to keep oil temps out of the red. IIIRC there was a Piper SB addressing that. New Baffling to accommodate a new larger cooler. It was expensive!!

    Need engine advice/help...

The deciding factor in the decision will be based on the cost of repair vs. overhaul. Have the RAM 160 HP conversion done. Best bang for the buck.

Feeling in over my head now

+1 on the crankshaft corrosion. Probably would not pass inspection!

Is My Prop Governor on the way Out?

Governor pressure keeps the prop from overspeeding. I vote failing control cable.

A-65 lost prime to oil gauge

Had a T craft that did that. It was OK to let it sit 5-6 days but by the 7th the prime was lost. Someone installed an oil line that "T"'d into the gauge line at the firewall. Open the on/off valve and insert business end of a squirt can can of oil and give it about 7 shots and it's ready to...

    ENGINE TEMPS

Had a Warrior with the D3G that ran high oil temp. Checked everything. New cooler and vernatherm etc. Gave up. Consumption was excellent and pressure was fine. Put an O-360-A4M. Ran hot just like the 60 did. Sold the 160 to an RV builder who never mentioned the OT being high. Sold the Warrior...

A different kind of hot start issue - help !

The only scenario not discussed here is inadequate main bearing clearances. If for whatever reason the case was assembled with fretting in the bearing saddles. This could happen if the case was not overhauled in spite of existing fretting or developed the fretted condition after assembly. When...

Single cylinder high EGT, very high CHT, rough engine - Clogged injector?

Angle valve cylinders rarely stick Exhaust valves even more unlikely at cruise power. I'd give it to moderate detonation starting with the cracked ceramic. Going full rich puts out the ignition source. I had one crack a ceramic on a long gentle climb out. Got to play with it on the way back to...

    Cub Engine Repair

Checking the flange for runout on a C- 90 will determine if is is bent or not. The problem is that the flange area is surface hardened so it can easily crack and dial within spec. Charlie Melot
