    Decision on Avidyne Equipment?

I installed an Avidyne IFD550 (plus Avidyne's ADS-B in/out that they threw in with the deal) into my Piper Cherokee Six 300. I didn't cut my teeth on Garmin, so I'm not biased and like Garmin gear. I stopped flying in '94 and started up again only a couple years ago when I got my instrument...

Using X-Plane 11 VR and VATSIM for IFR Practice?

Yes. X-plane 11 works great with Oculus Rift + touch controllers. A fast gaming pc is needed for good perf.

Using X-Plane 11 VR and VATSIM for IFR Practice?

Good stuff. I’m keep flip flopping over using VR with PilotEdge. Even though I can bring my iPad with Foreflight into the VR cockpit, it’s still a hassle to try and manipulate it. I own the RealityXP Garmin 650 and will check out the RealSimGear device. Another reason to not go VR! :-)

    Decision on Avidyne Equipment?

Amen to that. And when you add touch screen to the mix (which I couldn't live without now), the big screen is a bigger deal for fat, jumpy fingers :-)

    Decision on Avidyne Equipment?

Hasn't been my experience with Avidyne, but I'm only 1 year in with my IFD550/AXP340/SkyTrax100 bundle. I just called Avidyne support today and a tech rep phoned me right back. No upsells so far. I agree that Garmin has great support, too.

One Hell Of A Steep Glideslope At Steamboat (KSBS)

Thanks, Ted. I'm a Virginian and got my PPL at the Quantico Flying Club (no longer there). I flew over the baby mountains there back in Oct and miss it. There's a good article in this month's Flying Magazine about getting comfortable with forward slips. Something even the majors do. I know that...

One Hell Of A Steep Glideslope At Steamboat (KSBS)

Totally. I've not been practicing enough circling approaches because the LPV and ILS approaches to DA seem more fun.

One Hell Of A Steep Glideslope At Steamboat (KSBS)

You'd think with my Hershey Bar Six I could land on whatever's directly below me by pulling power :-)

One Hell Of A Steep Glideslope At Steamboat (KSBS)

My circle back around to 32 was just fine and what was called for. My mistake to get greedy and dive for RWY 32 from the FAF.

One Hell Of A Steep Glideslope At Steamboat (KSBS)

I fly a Cherokee Six 300. My normal approach speed is 100 kts. The mystery is solved: I should have been flying to MDA and made a lap in the pattern, not go directly for the runway from the FAF. Notes for next time! :-)

One Hell Of A Steep Glideslope At Steamboat (KSBS)

Ah, duh! I realize my mistake. I decided on making a visual approach at the FAF straight into runway 32. This GPS-E approach was only meant to set me up to hit the MDA of 8140 for circling, which is essentially what I did by going around and entering the normal pattern. If I was targeting the...

One Hell Of A Steep Glideslope At Steamboat (KSBS)

I thought that applies from the final approach fix and, in this case, to the circling MDA of 8140.

One Hell Of A Steep Glideslope At Steamboat (KSBS)

I flew by Aspen last week. Very calm day and I was itchin' to add it to my bucket list. I've heard the landing fees are painful, though. Last time my meager Cherokee Six was in a sea of private jets was at Teterboro. She's still recovering from that ;-) By comparison, Steamboat Springs airport...

One Hell Of A Steep Glideslope At Steamboat (KSBS)

It was a beautiful, calm day today so I decided make my first trip ever to Steamboat Springs (KSBS). I donned my oxygen and flew flight following at 14,500 with the intention of doing a practice approach on the RNAV (GPS) E. Everything was just dandy until I hit the final approach fix at the...

Garmin GNS 750 vs Avidyne IFD 540

@Glenn C I read a review of the Garmin GFC 600 (vs. S-TEC 3100) in "IFR Magazine" that was installed on a 340. Garmin got the nod. Strange they don't have the 310 on the list!
