    NW PA, SW NY ???

FKL has a great Italian restaurant in the terminal. GKJ has a foot long hotdog place and an ice cream parlor a short walk from the field. Absolutely come down to BKL and hang out in Cleveland for a while.

    Something going on around DC

The flight plan wasn’t direct KISP, it ended in CCC KISP, presumably to pick up and instrument approach to runway 24. The autopilot flew the leg from the Calverton VOR to the airport, then continued in a straight line.

When have you declared an emergency?

Towards the end of a relatively long flight, my wife comes on the headset from the back seat and tells me my son was losing consciousness and she couldn’t keep him awake. We had been cruising between 9 and 11 thousand, but I think the combination of altitude, heat and dehydration was too much...

Normal for a 'bo to dump fuel during startup?

The CSOBeech hot start guide says to run the fuel pump for 45+ seconds with the mixture at cut off. It looks like someone tried that and either didn’t have the mixture at cut off or has a problem with the mixture that is allowing fuel to flow at cut off.

    Rental EV's - (lesson learned)

I rented a Tesla from Hertz and loved it. I picked it up with about 80% charge. I drove it 100 miles over a few days, charged it once overnight at a destination charger at my hotel, returned it at 80% charge, and didn’t pay a cent for gas. They told me just to return it with greater than 10%...

Westchester NY: plane missing, possibly down.

Dual G5s, GFC500, 530w, Insight G3. Over the past 3 years I’ve logged more time in that plane than any other plane I’ve flown. In fact, I just looked and thats the plane in my profile picture.

    VFR/IFR flight - departure question

Depending on how much VMC you have, this might work too. It’s pretty easy for a controller to make an aircraft on VFR flight following into an IFR flight. So what I’ve done before is called up for flight following, and then when I know I’m going to need a clearance in the next half hour or so...

    Midwest to South Florida

If you do file IFR, the routing I used to get most often once you get to Florida is OCF V157 LAL QUNCY. I’m not sure if it’s any better now, but when I was flying a similar route a year or two ago JAX approach was super busy and turning down VFR Flight Following. If you want to be talking to a...

Aargh! How do you manage ramp life in the winter?

My club’s cold starting instructions tell us to prime the engine (about double what we would in summer), then, with the mags OFF, get out and pull the prop through by hand at least two full revolutions. That does two things: it gets the cold oil moving, and also gives the priming fuel more time...

    Amateur Rocketry

I launched very few of my own rockets. You all may be interested in some recent projects I saw on Twitter: Rocket powered Christmas tree Project KegRocket They are both exactly what they sound like.

And the award for “Most in need of new N number” goes to…

A while ago @SkyHog had N999NN reserved. I’m not sure if it ever ended up on a plane, though.

Plane down at middle school football field

I don’t buy that it was a stall or a simulated engine failure. The field in which they landed is inside the CGF class D airspace. The only simulated engine out I’ve ever done in the delta was to the runway. Otherwise it would have been at least a few miles east of there. A stall is also unlikely...

Plane down at middle school football field

Are there videos of the incident that you’ve seen? The most I’ve been able to find is the WKYC aerial footage of the wreckage. I’m a member of this club. Larry instructed me for my IFR and is who I normally fly with for flight reviews and IPCs. The news says he’s in the hospital with broken ribs.

    Pittsburgh, PA area airports

The one time I flew to Pittsburgh I flew into PIT. It was GA friendly. It wasn’t super cheap but was reasonable for a Bravo. I’ve stopped once at AGC, but it was just for fuel so I can’t comment on how easy it is to get to the city. Pittsburgh ATC is great— they helped me around some weather...

    Holding the Glideslope

I don’t think it’s necessarily the same control inputs either way. If I’m trimmed at the correct airspeed in a fixed gear aircraft I can pull a couple hundred RPM off and not touch the yoke and the plane will start down the glide slope at the same airspeed. If I use the yoke to make the change I...
