Cost of flying down 17% in one year -- so where is everyone?

Jay, I'm surprised you haven't jumped on the opportunity to steer this in an aviation direction . I can see lots of possible aviation-literature themed rides, and with an aviation themed hotel in town, its almost a destination resort! Any recommended theme rides based on aviation...

Cost of flying down 17% in one year -- so where is everyone?

Look at it from another perspective, the convention center makes infinitely more sense than the rainforest that was going to be built :-) I never did understand the link between Iowa City / Coralville and rainforests. I guess too many tourists were heading to the Amazon or Hawaii vs. Iowa...

Early 80s A36 Bonanza vs. Saratoga

I wonder if the rate of gear collapses is accelerating significantly due to the aging of the fleet of 210s. I've always heard of instances where 210s have gear issues, so this doesn't seem like a new thing. This could certainly make sense as the reason insurance is going up so much. Eric

Early 80s A36 Bonanza vs. Saratoga

I agree, I thought it was really weird that 2 insurance companies at OSH last year quoted me lower rates on a Baron than a T210. Of course they wanted me to do 20-25 hours dual in the Baron including finishing the multi rating where the T210 required about 5 hours, but the rates were...

Early 80s A36 Bonanza vs. Saratoga

Yeah, I have thought about the 80s vintage Mirage / Malibu at times (cost of a new Matrix is out of the question), but the price would require finding a couple of partners who want the same thing. Known Ice and Pressurization would be really appealing, but from what I've seen, the useful load...

Early 80s A36 Bonanza vs. Saratoga

Thanks for the feedback. I guess I should have clarified that the prices were approximately the same, and for older aircraft, I have been considering 1984 = 1982 = 1978 when it comes to age. There are nice Bonanzas and nice Saratogas in roughly the same price range with similar hours and...

Early 80s A36 Bonanza vs. Saratoga

Thanks for the feedback on A36 interior configurations. Does anyone know if the newer Saratogas can have the second row facing forwards? I have seen numerous Lances and Chrokee Sixes with forward facing seats (the Six I used to fly had 7 forward facing seats). However, I don't think I have ever...

Early 80s A36 Bonanza vs. Saratoga

I was wondering if the headroom could be fixed by reclining the pilot's seat a bit. Is it possible to turn the second row to face forward in any vintage of A36, or is this only possible in certain vintages? I haven't seen many with all forward facing seats, and none of them have been newer than...

Early 80s A36 Bonanza vs. Saratoga

Interesting that the price appears to be very similar for the two aircraft of fairly similar vintages and conditions. The A36 might be slightly more expensive, but not much. I've got to go find an A36 to fly somewhere nearby to see how it really handles. I'm guessing the Saratoga isn't all...

Early 80s A36 Bonanza vs. Saratoga

True, but I'm interested in hearing the arguements why each group prefers their plane. Also, I'm really interested in hearing from the folks who have time in both. Thanks, Eric

Early 80s A36 Bonanza vs. Saratoga

A while back I posted to get impressions of used SR-22s vs. Mooney Ovations. In addition to the 4 seaters, I'm interested to get people's impressions of the early 1980's A36 Bonanza vs. Piper Saratoga which both have more space and useful load. The mission is 2 adults and 2 kids with luggage...

    2002 Cirrus SR22 vs. 1996 Mooney Ovation

The Pilatus is great, but doesn't really work for transporting 4 people and luggage. I've debated the Piaggio / Focke-Wulf 149 since that is about as close to a 4 seat Pilatus P3 as I could find. However for transportation, I'd prefer something a bit newer and something set up better for modern...

    2002 Cirrus SR22 vs. 1996 Mooney Ovation

That's the best reason I've heard yet to choose one or the other! I'll take the "soul-meter" along on the test flights and post the measurements... Unfortunately neither seems to have as much soul as my current plane, but I can't fit the family in a warbird... Thanks, Eric

    2002 Cirrus SR22 vs. 1996 Mooney Ovation

Thanks for the recommendation to join MAPA. I'll probably wind up joining COPA and MAPA when I get closer to seriously looking (still have to ell the current plane). I thought the early Ovation had a prop that was worse in cruise than the later ones. The articles I read suggested the older ones...

    2002 Cirrus SR22 vs. 1996 Mooney Ovation

Thanks for the information on the Mooney. The mission is 2 adults + 2 children with luggage, totalling 600 lbs for flights between 500 and 1000nm range. I'm assuming a stop is needed for 1000nm both for gas and for the kids. How much of a performance decrease do you get with the TKS? I see...
