    Welding Aluminum

Reading this you would think welding is a poor substitute for Elmer's glue. The other day I noticed a tear in my loader bucket about 4 inches long right around where the pins attach the boom arms to the bucket. I could have replaced it, 200 miles each way to the dealer and $1500, IF they...

    Car Brand Stereotypes

Some of these comments about GM seem very myopic. The world is the competition and other governments are FULLY supporting private enterprise. There is no way to compete with countries like China, Korea, India, etc. without government help. If that takes a bailout then so be it. The biggest...

    Car Brand Stereotypes

Why? If the government would have held the stock a little longer the tax payers would have gotten off free and saved a lot of jobs and a major U.S. company, I don't blame GM for that.

    Welding Aluminum

It really was perfect, better than the original. For example the wing root fairings on the original were three pieces if I remember correctly and Kent did them in one. That crash was an absolute tragedy. I've though a lot about the ironies of a modern reproduction with 60 years of technology...

    Welding Aluminum

Just for conversation and for some reading for those interested, here is a link to a guy that I trained with - Kent White. He does all kinds of aircraft repairs and including WELDING sheet. Here are some examples of his work that include welding airframe Al sheet: P-51 wing root repair...

Oxford University Survey on Security Issues in Air Traffic Communication

I tried to take the survey and gave up because my answers were all, "it depends". I would suggest if you really want to gather good data that you enlist some pilots to help you design the survey questions. No offense, but it currently reads like a computer science department made this up in a...

Tom- Are you saying you would never weld aluminum to do a repair?

    Welding Aluminum

I do a lot of fabrication and machine work: see a problem, fix a problem, no powerpoint required, good for the soul.:) The other thing about this scenario is that it is also easily inspected, so we also have the "why not" factor. If it starts to crack, no biggie, pursue plan B.

    Welding Aluminum

I understand. Not knowing the alloy in question let's say 6061-t6 was used. . So we've gone from ~40Kpsi tensile to ~10-11Kpsi in the HAZ. Does it matter is the question I ask myself? On a wing spar, sure, on an air box shouldn't be a problem. Raises an interesting question whether the weld...

    Welding Aluminum

OK, you can tell I'm obviously no A&P. Sheet should be even better for welding depending on the alloy. I know the engineers cringe, but I weld aluminum all the time and rarely have any issues with cracking despite no post weld treatment. I focus more on the fit-up and minimizing welding induced...

Have you ever wanted to quit your training?

I believe people quit training all the time, in part because they realize they are spending $10K or more to do…. pretty much nothing. It isn't like the day you get your ticket you will pilot your own Citation to Aspen with the family on board relaxing in style. Rather you will scratch around and...

    Car Brand Stereotypes

I agree I used to see all kinds of Mercedes (mostly C&E class), but not so much anymore. On the lower end I see VW group stuff and surprisingly a lot of Prius' are cabs.

    Car Brand Stereotypes

I go to Germany several times a year. Driving on the autobahn I see Audi's everywhere. FAR more than Mercedes, or any other premium line car. Tells me they must have it together. I would love to have the big Audi wagon I see going 200 kph+ all the time. To your point, I would buy the...
