IFR Flight Plan Starting at a VOR?

Yes, you can use any fix as a beginning, middle or end of an IFR flight plan. This could be a VOR, a VOR with radial and distance (eg DCA010030), a lat-long fix or whatever. I have done this many times. Jon

    Medical Wait Time!

Unfortunately, that would literally take an act of Congress. I wouldn't hold my breath. Jon

All three Las Vegas airports will charge a $3,000 landing fee during F1 races

If the airports did not take US taxpayer funding, you might have an argument for this type of pricing. But they do take taxpayer funding, and that comes with a responsibility to be open an non-discriminatory to all users. Jon

All three Las Vegas airports will charge a $3,000 landing fee during F1 races

The three airports HND, LAS and VGT are all owned and operated by Clark County, Nevada. My note to the county airport manager has gone unanswered for a few weeks now. I told him I believe this pricing violated federal grant assurances that the airport needs to be open to the public without...

What's the deal with crossing in and out the ADIZ in the GOM?

You would be in violation of US law without an active IFR or DVFR flight plan. Jon

What's the deal with crossing in and out the ADIZ in the GOM?

You would be entering the US through an ADIZ, so all requirements of FAR Part 99 need to be met. This includes an appropriate flight plan, communication with a US ATC facility, transponder etc. See also the Aeronautical Information Manual starting on 5-6-1. Jon

Operating in Class D without clearance

Might be worth a call to the tower chief. Maybe you could propose a letter of agreement for your operations. Jon

Pireps for Chinle, AZ E91 near Canyon de Chelly?

While I've never landed at Chinle, I have flown over it a hundred times. The airport is unattended, but there is an aeromedical service based there (Guardian Air I think), so you might be able to track down a phone number to ask. Medical transports are the primary use of the airport, and I know...

    Remote towers - doomed?

I think the concept is ridiculous. If traffic warrants a control tower, then they should set up and staff a control tower. Existing control towers have been proven useful at reducing collisions. I don't believe that can be said about these remote towers. Jon

    Anger directed at drug abusers

As stated above, there is in fact a law in Texas limiting a prescription of opioids for acute pain to 10 days: https://texas.public.law/statutes/tex._health_and_safety_code_section_481.07636 There may be other reasons the prescriber limited it to 3 days, such as hospital or department policy...

    Eagle, CO

I love the Eagle valley. I worked sometimes in Avon, which gave me an excuse to commute by Mooney into Eagle County airport. Unfortunately, the place I was working closed permanently two years ago, so I don't get up there much anymore. Eagle is a great airport. Historically it has been very...

Flight lessons- Once a week adequate- or waste of time/money for PPL?

I would recommend students try to schedule twice a week. On average 1 out of 3 scheduled lessons will be canceled for various reasons, such as weather, mechanical issues, the renter ahead of you being late etc. The cancellation percentage is higher for solo, and even higher for solo...

Requesting a replacement certificate to the FAA online vs. mail

Many people on this board have been flying for decades and still learn new things. It is just not possible for any CFI to teach a student everything he needs to know about aviation in a Private Pilot course. Many have described a Private certificate as a license to learn. Jon

    Enterprise FBO Program

The drop-off premium with Enterprise definitely varies by location, and can be zero in my experience (twice in the past year, in different time zones). Rental cars in general are an absolute pain these days, overpriced and sometimes hard to get. You have to do a lot of homework to avoid being...
