Flying around Texas in early October

Your Bonanza loves grass fields. It's like landing on a big soft pillow and so easy on the tires and brakes. Now that I''m at a grass field, I never want to land on asphalt again.
Believe me, his Freebird isn't a Bonanza! :wink2:

But yes, I agree that a Bonanza loves grass. Many planes do!

I don't know of many planes that won't like grass. My Comanche loves it. So do Barons and 310's. Maybe a big SE with a heavy nose gear might want to go somewhere else - something like a T28. Other than that, I can't think of many airplanes that won't like a good grass strip of decent length/width.

I was never really happy with my early Grumman AA5 on grass. It has the castering nose, limited elevator travel, spring steel gear legs, and tight wheelpants. Not that it can't be done, it was just not a good candidate for a lot of grass fields.

There are some with marginal clearance. The Mooney Acclaim that Kent is flying is an example (note that I'm not saying it's true of all Mooney's, witness Mooney Row at Gaston's one year!) Dave felt uncomfortable with the P Baron there one year, too. Don't know how or if that differs from the Baron you mention.

Forecast for my fuel stop in Oklahoma tomorrow:

"Friday: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Cloudy, with a high near 68. North wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms."

Wonder if it will be IMC, too.

Hmmmmmm........

"When predicting the weather in North Texas, especially in the winter, never, never never ever broadcast that we'll have have snow or icy precipitation until it is actually on the ground in front of you. And even then, you'll only be correct half the time."
-- Harold Taft, Meteorologist Emeritus from the old KXAS Channel 5 news team.

Been many a time in the last 15-20 years the newsies will forecast icy or snowy conditions, the schools and the municipalities do a complete shut down, and we wind up with a wonderful CAVU day with temps in the balmy 60's.

A friend with a 1968 A36 shares that sentiment. Claims hard surface runways as an "extravagant luxury"

I think I remember Wayne telling me about DC-3's visiting Cedar Mills (3T0)

I remember a time back in the early 1990's, IIRC, when I was in College Station, TX, for a week and the temp was the low 30*s and there were flurries. Ugh!

Next time just hang a right at the CLL VOR and fly about 1,100 nm west. Land at PSP. Winter weather will be better.

PIREP from the farm: Weather here is poop. Stormy with low, fast moving scud at tree top level.

Turf strip took a good-sized chunk out of my nose pant. I haven't landed on too many turf strips since, and won't with good reason. And no, the pants aren't coming off. They belong. Plenty of clubs and rental places don't let aircraft land on grass, I imagine for the same reason.

Diana, another day. That is the essence of adventure, you never know where you're going or when you'll get there. Have fun.

Grass fields will do whatever is necessary to keep the Cherokees and other riff-raff away.

The smart ones already left for Texas.

Bummer. Hope you can make it, we always look forward to seeing you when you come this way and have great fun while you're here. I sincerely hope the weather turns around quickly and your trip works out as planned.

Hey Walt, she's going in the tank just like we figured. I'm calling first dibs on the extra bowl of Gumbo.

Aren't you nice. :)

Aha! The REAL Wayne.

Don't plan on eating my share of Gumbo yet! Tomorrow I hope to work my way down there, even if it means having to spend the night at Muskogee or McAlester.

Wayne likes to live dangerously...

...WX looks good for this Sunday, so Diana may have to adjust her routing, but that's what her tours are all about anyway! Bet we see her at T14 Sunday...

Looking for a ride over to Walt's....

There's got to be someone that can make the short hop to KDTO to fetch me. I'll reimburse my fair share of fuel...

Weather is looking great for Sunday! I may need to make extra. :)

I guess I could straighten out some coat hangars...
(You might wanna bring your own)

Tomorrow's weather really does look great! Today, not quite as good.

Walt, what time are you planning on serving gumbo?

Noonish or thereabouts. Come when you can.

Frost on the pumpkins at Twin Oaks. Little bit of rain in Oklahoma. Fuel stop will be KMLC. Headed out shortly. Please don't let Wayne eat the last bowl of gumbo before I get there!!

I'll be there, with my bride... if Mike hasn't found a ride (flight) in, he can ride with us (email sent). Will bring a bottle of wine and some saltines, and some wire hangars for s'more sticks. And an empty belly.

Affirmative email sent back.

Best-laid plans . . .

Wayne! Spike! What happened to you guys? You missed some GREAT gumbo!

If I had known what I know now I would have rented a room in Greenville and turned off the phone.

If I hadn't been here with the phone turned on, I wouldn't have answered it. If I hadn't answered it, I wouldn't have known about . . .

Huh? You lost me! Kept hoping to see your polished bird enter the pattern!

(Hangs head in shame). Building had power shutdown overnight. Had to go fire up servers and phones. One battery backup unit failed. Phones and data inop when powered up.

It sucks to be responsible.

Same thing happened here. Had to reset all clocks, network servers and coffee pot. Some devices I didn't look at probably have the blinky-12:00 but they will just have to wait.
