PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR RECEIPTS - THIS IS IMPORTANT!!

WITH THE CHRISTMAS SEASON COMING UP THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT. PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG! CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS BEFORE LEAVING ANY CASHIER'S STATION!

It happened at Wal-Mart (Supercenter Store #1279, 10411 N Freeway 45, Houston , TX 77037 a month ago.

I bought a bunch of stuff, over $150, & I glanced at my receipt as the cashier was handing me the bags. I saw a cash-back of $40. I told her I didn't request a cash back & to delete it.

She said I'd have to take the $40 because she couldn't delete it. I told her to call a supervisor.

Supervisor came & said I'd have to take it! I said NO! Taking the $40 would be a cash advance against my Discover & I wasn't paying interest on a cash advance! If they couldn't delete it then they would have to delete the whole order. So the supervisor had the cashier delete the whole order & re-scan everything!

The second time I looked at the electronic pad before I signed & a cash-back of $20 popped up. At that point I told the cashier & she deleted it. The total came out right. The cashier agreed that the electronic pad must be defective. (yeah, right!)

Obviously the cashier knew the electronic pad wasn't defective because she NEVER offered me the $40 at the beginning.

Can you imagine how many people went through before me & at the end of her shift how much money she pocketed?

Just to alert everyone. My coworker went to Milford , DE Wal-Mart last week. She had her items rung up by the cashier. The cashier hurried her along and didn't give her a receipt. She asked the cashier for a receipt and the cashier was annoyed and gave it to her. My coworker didn't look at her receipt until later that night. The receipt showed that she asked for $20 cash back. SHE DID NOT ASK FOR CASH BACK!

My coworker called Wal-Mart who investigated but could not see the cashier pocket the money. She then called her niece who works for the bank and her niece told her -- This is a new scam. The cashier will key in that you asked for cash back and then hand it to her friend who is the next person in line.

Please, please, please check your receipts right away when using credit or debit cards!

This is NOT limited to Wal-Mart, although they are the largest retailer so they have the most incidents.

I am adding to this....My husband and I were in Wal-Mart North Salisbury and paying with a credit card. When my husband went to sign the credit card signer, he just happened to notice there was a $20 cash back added. He told the cashier that he did not ask nor want cash back and she said this machine has been messing up and she canceled it. We didn't think anything of it until we read this email.

I wonder how many "people" have been, or will be, "stung" by this one?
CHECK YOUR RECEIPT BEFORE LEAVING THE STAND. I'VE SEEN PEOPLE DO JUST THAT. NOW I'LL START!

Hmm.... Good thing to watch for.

Re: [SCAM ALERT] Paying for your purchase by credit card?? Double Check that Receipt

Cashback is only available when using a debit card

Re: [SCAM ALERT] Paying for your purchase by credit card?? Double Check that Receipt

Not to ding the OP, but I am forever amazed by some glitch in the human psyche that gets exploited by folks who spin these yarns and feed their egos in the hope of seeing them go "viral."

If 1% of these "URGENT!!! FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW!!!" emails ever turn out to be true, well, I'll be a monkey's uncle.

Re: [SCAM ALERT] Paying for your purchase by credit card?? Double Check that Receipt

Umm, I've accidentally used my credit card as debit transaction at the grocery store and gotten cash back, and subsequently dinged for the whole transaction. There are some credit cards that will allow it.

Re: [SCAM ALERT] Paying for your purchase by credit card?? Double Check that Receipt

Not to ding the OP

Not to worry... by the nature of my business, I work with dings and dents every day! :D

And thanks for the Snopes link.

Re: [SCAM ALERT] Paying for your purchase by credit card?? Double Check that Receipt

Man, people are gullible. http://www.snopes.com/fraud/atm/cashback.asp

And when have you EVER seen a cash back option when running a credit card? I never have.

Sent via teletype

As wrong as this post might appear to the alert users of Snopes, et all. The actual message is worthwhile. People should look at their receipts before they leave any check stand or gas pump.

I purchase a lot of stuff from Pet Smart every month, they are constantly screwing up the prices of items I have purchased. They will have sale prices on their shelves, then when they ring the item up, it's at full retail.

I've saved myself well over several hundred dollars just this year by checking my receipts at the register.

As far as holding up the line goes, it's like a runway on short final, it's mine. Same with a check out stand. Besides that, I'm old, old people are supposed to irritate young people by being slow. I've more than a few times had people roar past me, even though I'm traveling ten miles an hour over the speed limit, just because they see my white hair.

Every time I go to Wal-Mart, it offers me cash back from my Discover Credit Card.

A few years ago, I went to Sears for a new washing machine. After they processed the sale and the terminal was waiting for my signature, they told me the machine was not in stock and they would deliver it next week. They said I had to sign the receipt before they could process a refund. I told them I did not agree to the terms, and would not sign. This went back and forth for a while until I realized they COULD NOT do anything until the pad was signed and the "OK" button was presses. OK would not pres without a signature.

I picked up the electronic pen and wrote VOID where the signature goes, and pressed OK.

Re: [SCAM ALERT] Paying for your purchase by credit card?? Double Check that Receipt

Cashback is only available when using a debit card

incorrect. Depends on the card issuer. Many Discover credit cards will allow cash back(partner with WalMart).

Re: [SCAM ALERT] Paying for your purchase by credit card?? Double Check that Receipt

Actually, WAL*MART and SAMS CLUB very much offer and allow cash back on the credit card. However, you are WRONG in one of you other premises. It is not processed as a CASH ADVANCE. This is a "cash over" transaction and as far as the credit card account is concerned, it's just part of the purchase you just paid for.

Re: [SCAM ALERT] Paying for your purchase by credit card?? Double Check that Receipt

If you use a debit card, you have to confirm the total with cash back. I would definitely notice this.

Also, I didn't know you could get cash back with a credit card at the grocery store. I thought you had to call the company.

The thing is...

20 years ago if you read it, you could take it to the bank as true...80 to 90% of the time.

Today, 90% of the time it's BS, particularly on the Internet.

Some people haven't come to that realization and/or been able to understand that transition.

I have also noticed the correlation of an otherwise private and quiet email address getting buried in spam shortly after a "friend" sends me one of these with 30 other email in the address box and the "FORWARD TO EVERYONE" instructions. :mad2:

Please, people... either don't forward these in the first place, or if you think it is so earth-shattering that others need to know, at least take the courtesy to BCC: them and not stick their email addresses at the top of a chain mail.

What I REALLY HATE is those people that send the emails that say "Forward this email to at least XXX people or bad things will happen to you." There was one person in particular that kept including me on her list.

I simply replied back to her "I invoke THREE TIMES the bad luck on the original senders of this message for forwarding me such ill will" and they stopped.

My former sister-in-law used to forward everything that showed up in her inbox to everyone she knew. When I saw her at a family event, she asked why I hadn't gone to her party the week before. I explained that I didn't know she was having a party. "But I sent you an emailed invitation". I sadly (outside - cheering inside) explained that I no longer had time to read all the emails she sends so must have just deleted it.

Not just no, HELL no.

BS chain letters have been around for at least a century, probably much, much longer.

Before the Internet (which was >40 years ago, not 20), they came by fax, snail mail, and word of mouth.

Some of us might remember the "Nieman Marcus cookie recipe." They are actually good cookies (and remarkably similar to the Nestle Toll House recipe on the back of their chocolate chips), but the story behind them is totally bogus.

Weird Al Yankovic even wrote a song about e-mail BS ("Virus Alert"). Bogus virus reports go back to at least the middle-80s (I suspect the Morris worm and the WarGames movie may have set people off).

Quite aside from the chain letters, there were quite a lot of both intentional and unintentional disinformation campaigns. Like "There is no evidence linking tobacco use to cancer." And various Bigfoot and crop circle hoaxes. And so on.

WARNING: Clever Scam - taking advantage of older men

Women often receive warnings about protecting themselves at the mall and in dark parking lots, etc. This is the first warning I have seen for men. I wanted to pass it on in case you haven't heard about it. This will only become more commonplace as the weather warms.

A 'heads up' for those men who may be regular Lowe's, Home Depot, or Costco customers. This one caught me by surprise.

Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping. Simply going out to get supplies has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don't be naive enough to think it couldn't happen to you or your friends.

Here's how the scam works: Two seriously good-looking 20-something girls come over to your car as you are packing your shopping into the trunk. They both start wiping your windshield with a rag and Windex, with their breasts almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts. It is impossible not to look. When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say 'No' and instead ask you for a ride to McDonalds..

You agree and they get into the back seat. On the way, they start undressing. Then one of them climbs over into the front seat and starts crawling all over you, while the other one steals your wallet. I had my wallet stolen September 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th, 24th, & 29th. Also October 1st & 4th, twice on the 8th, 16th, 23rd, 26th & 28th, three times last Monday and very likely again this upcoming weekend.

So tell your friends to be careful. What a horrible way to take advantage of older men. Warn your friends to be vigilant.

Wal-Mart has wallets on sale for $2.99 each. I found cheaper ones for $1.99 at K- Mart and bought them out. Also, you never will get to eat at McDonalds. I've already lost 11 pounds just running back and forth to Lowe's, Home Depot, and Costco.

Maybe this has already been said, but similar happened to me a couple of years ago at best buy. I got home and noticed a $25 gift card had been added to my purchase. I couldn't get it refunded though, because who would believe me.

Make sure that they are adding things onto your transaction.

True...very true...bogus crap has been around for a long time...but that slow technology only constituted probably 10% (on the outside) of what we read back then.

Now, a sinificant percentage of our info comes from the Internet and e-mail and much of that info is suspect.

Not to exceptionally rude to anyone but why the F is anyone using a debt card to buy anything? NO ONE should HAVE or USE a debt card. Why?

If you are going to pay for something - then use cash. If you want the convenience of a card- then use a credit card and pay it off.

If your credit card number gets stolen . . .whose money gets taken first? The Banks.
Who has to work to recover it? The Bank.

If your debit card or checks are stolen - whose money gets taken? YOURS.
Who then has to prove you did not take the money? You.

NEVER NEVER NEVER use or possess a debit card for any purpose.

If your debit card is lost assuming you can prove to the bank you did not make the purchases [see how hard it would be to prove you did everything EXCEPT do the cash back at Walmart?] you are out the money for up to a week to ten days while the bank takes its sweet time investigating. In the mean time every other check and authorized transaction has bounced and you are now a) a deadbeat to the people you wrote checks to or pre-authorized money and b) owe fees on top of fees.

It'll all get straightened out eventually - but - you will ALWAYS have people who think you are deadbeat.

If you NEVER use a debit card, your cash is never at risk.

Replace debit card in above with check.

Then replace check with cash.

The only way to not get money stolen is to not have any. All transactions require trust and have risk. Blaming people for using debit cards is a bit silly in my opinion, since bank account numbers can be stolen and cash can be lost or stolen. Transactions for goods or services can be fraudulent. This post kinda sounds overly bitter to me. Best to never buy anything, ever.

Credit cards have very specific protections that debit cards do not.

Try declining a fraudulent or erroneous charge to your debit card. The money's already gone. Credit card --- no problem.

Ask the folks caught with debit cards whose checking accounts were emptied out in the recent SouthWest on-line botched promotion how long it took to straighten out all of the botched auto-payments that then bounced, and fix the associated fees. And that was from an honest company.

No one can empty out your checking account with a credit card -- or steal more cash than you are carrying in your wallet at the time.

Ok i won't deny that. I use a credit card for everything and have daily transaction logs emailed. I was bristling at the cash thing :)

Not quite 100% true.

My father and I have both our personal and business accounts with a local only bank (www.pointbank.com). And both accounts do have debit cards attached. And we have been there for nearly 15 years now.

Recently Dad discovered 4 fraudulent transactions adding up to about $600-700 and immediately went to our bank officer (a senior VP of the bank). Once the appropriate paperwork was complete and signed, account was closed, a new one re-opened, a new card issued, and all of the stolen money was returned.

Good for Dad for reacting quickly, and having a local bank that handled the matter with integrity.

Although individual banks can voluntarily decide to exceed them, the federal liability rules between debit and credit cards are quite different. After 2 days, the debit card issuer can legally withhold $500, after 60 days, the entire amount.

And the matter still stands that debit cards withdraw directly (and quickly) from your bank account, and you've got to fight to get it put back in. I don't think many people understand that. They just think it's neat that the bank gave them a Visa/Mastercard to go with their checking account.

Thats my point. Debit cards are ASKING for the loss of your money.

Sure - checks and checking account information can be stolen which is why I think I write maybe 10 checks a month now.

I use almost no cash either - EVERYTHING is done by credit card except for tipping that needs cash and the bribes, er, tips, that get me stuff I want.

You know, Mike, a small town local bank where you have deposits and long term banking relationship is going to be completely different from BofA or Wells or a big commercial bank.

The rules are simple: When there is fraud on your credit card the bank loses money, when there is fraud on your debit card you lose the money.

Which do you prefer?

Which is exactly why avoid those banks. We were originally with Wells and the service became very bad. PointBank has been awesome.
