Kimberly - thats the part you need to discuss . . . on the ground - before engine start.

Kimberley: you want me to take it off - ok. Remember - you are PIC since I lack a HP / complex signoff. I have never taken off a retract, what are the speeds? Flap settings? Etc? Who will handle the rudder inputs? What is our callout for gear, flaps, etc.?

Owner: gee, ok, you are right. Let me think about this -

Thats how you effectively manage it - saying no removes any issue but it also removes the ability to learn anything.

You handle the p factor and torque by simply bringing the power on easy - heck - I can handle it but I still bring the power on easy since I don't want anything to break inside the engine! As the engine comes up you can feel the right rudder you need and work it in slowly, like the power.

speeds are pretty common - most complex single retracts Vr around 65-70kts or so. Given that stall speeds dirty MUST be 61kts or lower - I'd say anything over 65 is prob safe.

Gear up when you can't land anymore on the remaining runway - which means 3000' or so from 50' up - if you have anything shorter than 6000' runway its gear up once positive rate is established.

Even if the guy is not a CFI he is not gonna let you wreck his baby - he'll be there with the appropriate inputs long before you get into any kind of trouble.

Its a license to LEARN, not a license to get comfortable with breakfast runs to Columbia and Bay Tours. . .

I've never been to Columbia and yes, I do a lot of Bay Tours. LOL. I read you loud and clear but that is the thing - he offered in the plane. It would have been different if I could have asked about V-Speeds etc. before the fact..... not while we are on the runway and the tower told us already to take off.

well, in that case, never mind . . .

in my best Emily Latella accent . . .

LOL Ace - a guy offered me THREE TIMES (three different flights) to take off in his six seater Bonanza. I said no three times. Lots of people refuse to do the takeoff. Good for you for doing it.

Thanks - I didn't think much of it at first, then it was happening :hair raise:
At that point, fight or flight :)

Ace,

You should be commended for your interest in something to bring more reality, and accuracy to your craft. As we've said before, often aviation is just butchered by the media and entertainment industry. As is medicine, law, business, and most other professions. However, a little research goes a long way, plus flying is FUN!

Good job!

Thanks Anthony. Research is fun, especially in this casE!!!

It had gear etc. I don't know, it wasn't my plane, I've only been offered "straight and level" flying before. I flew it for several hours (he turned off the autopilot) but that was just rudders and yoke. I feel like takeoff and landing are kind of - well - important.

Then later after we landed I discovered not only is the guy a CFI, he was a pro pilot and has owned dozens of planes. If I knew that in the beginning it would have been "heck yeah I want to take off". The most accomplished people often never brag about it. I also found out he spent 10 years at SFO / SJC as a tower controller.

Geez, lol, to think Joe reached out and I just went up with him! Same for you, I figured if you offered to take me up, you know what you're doing ;)

Joe, what should I have asked then when you said, "you're going to take her off the ground."

LOL

R U qualified to fly this airplane? R U current and proficient?

I won't answer that - thats for the pax to answer!

Hey NotorieACE. Your camera hand became more staider I can tell ! :)
Glad you got a ride. In fact, you have visited my airport ! How do you like that greasy food at Landings ? :D

Ace:

A friend of mine just emailed me a video of our flight. I really need to learn how to film, edit, and add music to my own videos. Yours are so much more awesome. This was with an iPhone and is really shaky:

Free Microsoft Live Movie Maker:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-live/movie-maker-get-started

See my YT, that is what I use. Just have a decently fast computer. My fast computer is down so I did those on my laptop (ASUS UL80Vt-A1 Core 2 Duo SU7300/1.30GHz NVIDIA GeForce G210M) and it was not a particularly happy experience.

I guess the other thing I need is time. I was using Windows Movie Maker back when I took a 30+ min solo video. I added text, chopped out the boring bits, etc. But it took so long I gave up mid-project and it is still unfinished. Then I found out YouTube has an upload limit. For some reason I'm now "past that" limit. Odd.

Yeah, I think the upload limit goes away pretty easily these days. MM on anything less than a powerful dual-core machine is going to be painful. My laptop is dual-core but not powerful. The machine I want to do this on is quad-core but I think I blew the CPU. I built the computer so the CPU is under warranty, just have not yet got around to it.

Does this rubber duck on the dash start squawking after detecting carbon monoxide ? :D

I let other people do takeoffs (and sometimes landings) in my ride. It keeps life interesting. :hairraise:

I just explain that if I scream, that means "My airplane".

Couple months ago, I took my sister for a ride and was letting her fly (She was doing fine). As we came over the fence, I moved my feet up to the rudder pedals and I hear "Oh, thank God!" over the intercom.

No but they just installed new carbon monoxide alarms (guess that wasn't in the video, they are huge floor units). They do sound a loud, audible alarm when needed. Or so I've been told. Mine hasn't gone off thank goodness.

HAHA! Thanks :)

I LIKED landings! I want to go back and try the omelet Joe had!

Now you just need to work on your "Chuck Yeager" voice and you'll be set.

I had the make your own - chorizo, peppers, green onions, cheese - it was tasty!

So when Ace gets back - maybe someone with a 172 or a Cherokee can take him up and get a him a landing or three . . .

Really nice Ace - lets get together when you get back!

Wait.... 7-1/2 G's?? In a Comanche? How steep was that turn?

Yeah... I think we've created another addict!

Hey All,

Well...It's time.

I'm leaving in a few hours for Cartagena. I can't say enough how thankful I am for the awesome embrace and generosity you guys..AND GALS have shown me here!

In 25 days since finding this site, I've been up in the air twice, flown a plane myself, met some great people as a result of recommendations from some of you, learned a GREAT deal and have really developed a different love for flying.

It really means the world to me!

I'll continue to keep you guys posted here, and I've started a blog to also share my experience of this movie, so if you ever are wondering, please check it out: http://www.acemarrero.blogspot.com

I'm also on Facebook, and if you are, I'd love to connect there: http://www.facebook.com/notoriace

I'm going to try to do daily journal videos on youtube, which I'll post on the blog, and try to keep up here as well!

Thanks again, and I'll keep popping in!

PS - if anyone is interested in checking out the flight plan/path:
