Foreflight

Does anyone know of a way to get any of these apps to display the map like any of the Garmin units? It seems like they all use the sectional map instead of an option for a basemap/ airports/airspace, etc (similar to when you use the clear button on a garmin 430/530 to go through how detailed you want it to display)

Its nice to "de-clutter" and show just the basics.

I have use skychartspro and have tried out garmin app and fore flight. Garmin customer support said they will only be offering the sectional map view.

WingX appears to have that capability - at least an airspace data overlay if nothing else. I don't use it so I don't know for sure but I've checked out their website. One thing I notice is that on the sectional map on Foreflight, the map placement of certain features such as airports, VOR's, etc... can be off by half a mile or more from the GPS database, so presumably airspace boundaries can be too. IFR charts appear to be on the money for the same objects.
 
Looking at the feature list for WingX on the app store, I can tell you what it does that ForeFlight doesn't currently do:

* Terrain
* CDI
* E6B (but you should get Jesse's E6B Pro app anyway. ;))
* FARs
* The split-screen view

I find terrain really important. Why is it so hard to implement?
Don't forget the new upgrade, which includes TRACK-UP. It also has a nice display of some of those basic things you should remember but want a reminder of in any case, like light gun signals, VFR clearance distances, etc, plus Synthetic Vision (or is that what you mean by Terrain?) and an interface with an ADHRS unit. It also quickly gives you airspace information with a single tap.

OTOH, there is a delay after resizing or moving the map while it recalculates and draws the route and other data.

Thanks, Looks like I figured out wing x settings. What I was looking for is View- "None" and options, "airspace, obstacles, terrain". The "runway" feature is nice to help you visualize the airport landmarks along your route as well.

What's the 40075CDA in the position box? Is that saying you're 40nm out on the 075 radial from the CDA VOR?

Sheesh, between the $750 AHRS, the $950 ADS-B receiver, the iPad from $499-$829 and the subscription, they're starting to make Garmin look cheap...

Once it all starts to play together a bit more nicely, though, it'll be really cool. That's an awful lot of extra boxes lying around the cockpit, though.
The SageTech Clarity receiver has AHRS, ADS-B and WAAS GPS all in one little receiver that connects WiFi (no wires) to the iPad. The cost is reasonable too. I have Wing-X with the Synth Vision and will be adding one of these to my setup.

Is it hard for foreflight to include terrain? I find it really important. I use foreflight presently and, true, its great. I am in the process of making the iPad my "yoke-mount", replacing my iQue3600A, which I bought a few years back, because it was the cheapest with terrain.

Another neat feature of WingX you didn't mention is the glide slope. I love it. When I approach my destination and I see it read 400 fpm I know to trim my plane to start the descent. It just makes it too easy. :rolleyes:

Show me a GPS unit that uses actual charts and does track up.

I still think that track up on a chart on an electronic device would be really weird.

WingX has it and it works pretty neat. It is not as weird as you might think. They have overlays for all of the important data that displays over the sectional so you can read it if the sectional is upside down. I just finished a cross country a couple of hours ago on a heading of 195. I flew track up all the way with the sectional almost upside down. Not weird at all. In fact I really like it. One tap with your finger and the display will toggle to north up.

Anyone had issues with foreflight dropping the GPS signal. I use the Bad Elf and on my XC I had to go to my iPod. Is it the Bad Elf or the ipad?

Satellite geometry as in not enough of them in view at the moment, weather/precip between you and the birds, blockage by the fuselage or you sitting in the way, electrical/RF noise from other equipment on board (maybe not continuous but only when transmitting, example Transponder or DME which aren't "that far" away from GPS spectrum, or noise from external or internal lighting systems), static from precip... the list of things that can cause GPS outages is long.

Been using the internal GPS/Location Services in the iPad 1 and iPad 3 for years now. Some drop outs from time to time. Never longer than a few minutes.

It's not a primary navigation device anyway... and was never intended to be. ;)

That position is near over top of my house... Off by about a mile.....

I have never lost GPS signal on the iPad while in the plane, but typically it's comm avionics which cause in-cockpit interference with GPS. Comm interference with GPS devices is common with some older radios.

FWIW... Technical nit... "ForeFlight" does not "drop the GPS signal" - The iPad does. ForeFlight simply takes what the iPad is feeding it, whether it's from the internal or an external source.

Also, take a look here and try their recommendations to see if you get any improvement.

I have a 3G IPad with Foreflight and no external GPS receiver. I've never lost GPS signal.

I understand that GPS reception has a lot to do with your position on the Earth. I fly in NorthEast Texas, SouthEast Oklahoma and SouthWest Arkansas.
 
Oh yeah? Do you fly out of Ptw?

I did my discovery flight there, used their sim for some training and stop in to hang out here and there, but do my training at KRDG.

So, how did you determine that the WingX screen shot is inaccurate? Or were you referring to the position of your house relative to the plot on the screen shot?

The position marker on that screen shot is about a mile from my house....

I know what I meant to say but I guess the fingers didn't interpret well. I had to re read it a few times before I realize that it could have been read another way... my bad

In the mountainwest, my 696 picks up between 8 to 11 satellites. Did loose a signal back in '94 on a much older Garmin (for a few minutes). I've owned five moving maps since that one.

Been waiting with anticipation, for all the drop dead GPS signals that should have occured over the last few solar storms. Such a disapointment.. when not much seems to happen. :D
