POA Caribbean Adventure Caravan

We're (probably) in.

My extra seats will depend on how much gear (survival, especially) we have along... I'd want a raft in the back seat, accessible. Somebody will probably tell me that having the raft in the right front seat and putting my wife in the back is "more accessible" than in the back, but getting out of the airplane would be first concern, as we'd be wearing inflatable vests for the over water crossings.

We own our life vests, which we too wear. We haven't done a raft before, but may for this one. In the back seat of under the seat, though. The Bo has over 900 lbs of payload, and we could probably go with reduced fuel to improve that. We don't need any clothes beyond a swimsuit per person, right? :)

Heck, there's always the possibility that we take the 310 or King Air instead. For that matter, why don't we shanghai Dave and all go in his King Air?

Always depends on what's going on in the world of war, but if I'm not deployed, I think we can make it.

If you will please pardon a total noob from stumbling in here - I found this thread while researching an entirely similar trip that I plan to do in May of this year (so 2012 :) ). Not exactly a "Pilot of America" though, as I'm based in Switzerland - so I'll hope you won't mind the intrusion!

I'll depart from Tampa - so if anyone wants to "join the formation" for part of the trip, or bum rides... I'll be most happy to meet fellow pilots.

Welcome! We're really international, don't let the name fool you! Keep us posted on the trip!

I'm flying to San Andros on May 1st. Maybe we'll see you on your first leg or two. Good luck on the trip!

The only plane I can definitely have access to is a c-150. The others would cost too much with minimum hours, etc. I would have the biggest adventure out of everyone thats for sure! myef-mbpv route looks a little far depending on winds. At 100kts that headwind can really slow you down.

It's always a possibility to fly with someone else!

Have a great trip!! That's AWESOME!

If I come to Switzerland, can I look you up for an aviation experience there? Switzerland and Austria have always been on my "must see" places list...

Troy,
Did you have a reason for selecting Nassau in the Bahamas, or was it just convenient? We usually stop at one of the out islands, instead (Abaco, Cat Island, or Staniel Cay). Never tried Nassau, except clearing customs outbound.

By all means please do! On top of it there's no bothering with visas, eAPIS, and-other-initial-laden-hassles :)

Apparently i can't link directly to my Flickr albums - but I've uploaded a few photos here under my profile albums to give you a teaser :)

Stops and length of stay at any stop are totally open to group discussion! Can we clear customs in the Bahamas anywhere else?

Beautiful pictures.. I love Switzerland.. My grandmother lived in Lausanne for most of her life and now my cousin lives in Lausanne. Whenever my cousin comes to the states I take her up in the Tiger and she really has a great time.

My nieces and I were on track to go to BVI before babies changed things for them. Don't know about that time, but I do plan to go sometime. I want to go back to Bitter End Yacht Club. I'd probably lean toward fewer stops and more time there, or could just link up there. Fun stuff!

Dave

So my trip is on - May 11th to June 1st - with stops in the Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico & St Barts (and further on if airspeed allows) :)

Congratulations! Keep us posted your expected landfall dates (once we get closer in) so we may be able to meet up! Coming from Switzerland, you have a lot of additional challenges!

You're going to have a great time!

I've got a minor problem... I may not be able to get a rental to do this trip. Final word isn't in yet, but insurance and leaseback agreements may keep me from taking either of the R182's, even if I pay the increase in insurance cost for temporary "outside the CONUS" coverage. Hoping to work it out, so this trip can happen. Buying my own plane by then isn't in the cards...

Anybody know of any south Florida FBOs that will rent for a Caribbean and points southeast trip? If so, flying commercial to Florida, and getting checked out, may be an option.

Troy / Grant / whoever,

I need to look at the dates - didn't realize some of you would have room for passengers. What an adventure. If I knew my share of the costs in advance perhaps I could join. If there were 2 seats perhaps the BF could pay too but again, he won't even tell me what we are doing for the weekend - let alone plan anything this far in advance!

Sounds like an excellent dive trip.

The only planes I know to rent for that are either 172 or a Seminole if he doesn't have a student booked.

OK, just looked back and I asked about being a passenger in 2011.

Anyone who might have room, please PM me what you would accept as my donation to help you (consider me only at this point, don't know about the boyfriend).

Alternatively I can just start saving money and see where I'm at when we get closer.

I deal with Atlas Aviation in Tampa - they have ben extremely helpful. Their insurance extends to the West Indies and any point in between WI and CONUS.

There's your best plan.

:yeahthat: I can't even promise that the plane we're planning to take will still be in the rental fleet when the time comes, or what the rate will be. Heck, if we have enough people we might even take an instructor and the 310 and Leslie and I can work on our multi ratings!

This sounds like a fun trip. I am going to pencil it on the vacation plans for next year.

Troy:

Get checked out in RFC's Bonanzas. They have been approved for out of country flying on a regular basis. N87MT (F33A with tip tanks) would be perfect.

Sooooo.... landing in Tampa on th 10th, getting my paperwork from the FAA next morning and the adventure is about to start...

Just got home from the Bahamas yesterday. It was a blast! Hope you have a great trip!

Well, it appears I'm officially out on this adventure, at least for the dates originally discussed. I nominate Grant to pick up the banner and tow it!
