I spent 2.5 days (so far) at Hicks Field, TX working on the first Vans aircraft to fly, the RV-1. An organization called "Friends of RV-1" is making this old bird airworthy again, it has been sitting for 20 years in a barn. When done it will fly it to SnF and several other flyins in 2012 before heading for it's final to OSH and the EAA museum.

It is powered by a 125 hp, O-290g. Fabric covered. Its a modified Stitts Playboy.

Donation deeply appreciated.

Thanks for looking. :D

If you or anyone you know the lives in the area would like to help work on the plane we need skilled RV / A&P types to help her the plane done by SnF. Tools and materials provided. You can stay in a local hotel or bring your camper.

If you know RV's and have some time on your hands, this is a great opportunity to be involved in experimental aviation history.

Airframe and motor are done. Little stuff, and lots of it. This is not going to be a show winner, we just need it to fly safe.

I am headed off to KSTS tomorrow to look at some RV's including maintenace, inspection, and perhaps even a flight. The EAA people seem cool.

Kimberly

PS - I have no "skills" but I will offer to help them work on their planes.

Sad to spend all of that time rebuilding it and then have it retired in a museum. You guys should keep it in service and touring the country for a few years.

It isn't timed correctly..

Yep, I just got an email from one of the guys. He also said the battery was weak, and it is a wooden composite prop so kicks backs are not uncommon. They make me nervou, things break!

What ignition system does it have?

an Impulse coupling will fire the mag at TDC.

How'd you get dual ignition on it?

some of the 0-290s have 0-235 cylinders. but unless it has the 0-235 accessory case it will not have the second mag drive pad.

this may not be the generator engine any more.

Dual impulse couplers, dual Slicks I think.

Anyone know the timing on a 0-290G

I don't think so. unless the impulse is not working, or very much out of time.

normal timing is 25 degrees up. just like the 0-235.

Lycoming overhaul manual says check the data tag but you may not have the right sump installed so it may be 20 or 25 degrees.

Very good question. I am not there to look, I am now relying on the guys working on it. It should not be kicking back that often with a low battery. When I find out more info I'll post. I'm pretty sure it has 8 plugs. Maybe it has a dual Bendix?

In any event they are looking into it and will come up with an answer.

Thanks for the input.

The RV-1 tour has received quite a lot of media attention, we’ve had coverage by:

Flying Magazine blog (http://www.flyingmag.com/blogs/fly-w...lebrating-rv-1 )

Kitplane’s March issue (http://kitplanes2.com/blog/2012/02/rv-1-flies-again-2/ ). Paul also flew a photo session for another future article (July?)

AvWeb a few days ago (http://www.avweb.com/news/snf/SunNFu..._206393-1.html )

Wired (http://www.wired.com/autopia/2012/03...e-flies-again/ )

AOPA this month (http://www.aopa.org/aopalive/?watch=...k2MhIjVNj7FGDB and http://www.aopa.org/members/files/pi...il/f_rv-1.html)

Canadian OPA newsletter will have an article written by Kevin Horton soon. There’s probably more, but this is my current list.

Wish I could afford to see you in June (tools say Marysville is 70nm from my home airport of O69). Problem is, there are two fly-ins (I will only go to one) that I'm saving up for. Plus, my Dad's birthday is in June, and I was going to give him a flight for his birthday. Are you landing at noon and staying the night there? It is several hours drive from my place but it could be a fun thing to do on a Saturday.

I'm not part of the flight crew, but IMHO it is not everyday you get to see the first RV ever to fly.

I see that it's coming to KVUJ's North Carolina RV Formation Clinic. I'll be there to see the RV-1. :D

I think this CA event / landing for June was presented at my EAA chapter meeting. Again, I won't be able to attend (too close to Gaston's / possible POA member visiting Bay Area as well)

Looks cool, I saw they are coming in for the day at PTW for an eaa event. If I remember its may 6th, but i'll check.
