Rum balls?

Rum Balls 2011!

Made a vegan batch for a party last weekend... Big hit with the vegan host and non-vegan guests!
Used Graham crackers instead of Nilla Wafers (which have whey and other animal products) and carob chips instead of chocolate. Amazingly, worked out more than fine - I'd do it again.

Also made a split batch of regular, with my usual Bacardi 151 and either butterscotch or cherry schnapps.

BTW, this year I'm getting 48ish per batch. Go figure!

So Vegans are allowed to imbibe? Hey count me in!

As long as it's not Guinness, which if you check the ingredients closely has animal fat in it. (There's a reason for that lovely head on top...)

I prefer the products from New Belgium, up the road from you in FoCo.

I have more chance of being a Vulcan, than becoming a Vegan. :D

Yeah, it's a tough call... Fat Tire, or Guinness. Fat Tire from the locals is pretty tasty. Guinness is a meal in a glass. Such difficult decisions!

I was going to post in this thread, but got too busy making rum balls! :D Thanks for reviving it! :D

Made three batches so far and making another tonight. Tomorrow I'm flying some to a friend of mine who lives on a grass field nearby. Then he will have Flown Rum Balls. :D

Diana. You are my hero. Flown rum balls. What could be better?

Here is the recipe I use. Easy and quick. I use a food processor to crush all the vanilla wafers.

If you like Bourbon balls just substitute the Bourbon for the rum

3 1/4 cups crushed vanilla wafers
3/4 cup confectioners' sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts
3 tablespoons light corn syrup
1/2 cup rum

1. In a large bowl, stir together the crushed vanilla wafers, 3/4 cup confectioners' sugar, cocoa, and nuts. Blend in corn syrup and rum.

2. Shape into 1 inch balls, and roll in additional confectioners' sugar. Store in an airtight container for several days to develop the flavor. Roll again in confectioners' sugar before serving.

I'll just take the Rum thank you very much. :)

You heathen.

Take a tall glass full of ice, add 2 shots of Captain Morgan while eating the milk chocolate. Add diet Cole with a dash of lime, stir.

Eat more chocolate and enjoy the rum. Throw nilla wafers to the dogs. ;)

'sok. I went to the store yesterday primarily for Nilla Wafers (after forgetting them when I bought all (most) of the ingredients the first time) and STILL forgot them! Had to go back today. :-/

Sounds like you're not forgetting the rum ;)

Mine are...
6 oz of Ghirahdelli chocolate chips
3 tblsp corn syrup
1/2 cup boiurbon (The other half is yours)
1/2 package of Chocolate Grams
1 tblsp confectioners sugar
5 or 6 oz Maricheno cherries
Melt the chips in a double boiler or microwave (at 30 second intervals). Sample the bourbon for quality. Mix in corn syrup and bourbon. Sample the bourbon for taste. Crush grams and blend sugar and cherries. Sample the bourbon. Mix the whole thing together. The hell with the samples. take a big hit off the bottle. Give them an hour in the refrigerator. Take time to have some more bourbon. Roll into 1" balls if you're still able. Another hit? Dust with granulated sugar and/or powered chocolate.
Substitute bourbon for your favorite liquor. 1/2 bourbon, 1/2 orange liquour.

Let's get ready to Rum Ball!!

The 2012 batch will be vegan again because (amazingly) I was invited back to this year's party. :)

A little Van Morrison on this gray day and off we go ...

One of my favorite entertainers, I used to go see his concerts before they got to be "YGBFSM" expensive.

I LOOOVE Rum balls if you leave out the balls, and replace the rum with bourbon.

Love Van Morrison. Just bought his latest album.

Last night and tonight have been rum ball nights. Looking forward to delivering some of them to local grass airstrips. :)

I saw Van Morrison in Galway Ireland at a beer festival. It was well after he was famous too.

After skipping it last year, I realized Christmas just isn't right without a little Rum Ball action!

Van Morrison? Check.
Bacardi 151? Oh yes.
Nilla Wafers? Let's do it!

(yes, I'm making rum balls I won't eat to take to a brew pub which serves beer I no longer drink so I can visit friends I seldom see ... :) )

Every time I try the bourbon balls they come out too dry, using an old recipe, will try one of the ones on this board.

They are meant to be washed down with burbon ;)

I forgot about this thread! Thanks for reviving it. :D

Our rum balls were excellent this year. My preferred method of delivery is via Citabria, but, alas, I ran out of time for that this year.

I think of you every year! :)
Citabria delivery ... rum ball drop?

@Diana
2016 rum balls have been made ... inspired by Samoas (Girl Scout cookies)

12 Kraft caramels (3.25 oz weight)
1 6 oz package semi-sweet chocolate chips (1 cup)
1/2 cup of sugar
1/2 cup liquor (2 oz Rum + 2 oz Butterscotch Schnapps)

2 cups vanilla wafers, crushed
4 Tbs unsweetened dried shredded coconut

Cocoa powder, for coating

Melt caramel FIRST, then add and melt chocolate, then sugar and liquor.
Mix dry ingredients separately, then fold into caramel/chocolate mixture.

Note: Did NOT use Karo as called for in other recipes as the added caramel makes up for it.

Ohhhhh, that looks good!

Funny...I was thinking about this thread while making rum balls yesterday. :)

Must be Christmas time, old post back to life and talking about balls again....:lol:

Your rum balls have become quite a hit up here. Thank you! :D

Yes, ghost of Christmas threads and posters past ...

Not Rum Balls, but there is a container of tequila centered chocolates out in the breakroom. I have so far been able to resist them, but it's been tough.

So, I flew a Christmas tin full of rum balls to a local neighbor's grass strip yesterday. Looks like the last warm day to fly here for awhile.

This year's batch of rum balls was the best ever. I find they taste better if I drink eggnog with rum while making them. :)

Hi Diana! I was thinking of you as I was making mine this year! Mine were a bit lacking in rum but easily made up for with beverage!

Hi Diana! I was thinking of you as I was making mine this year! Mine were a bit lacking in rum but easily made up for with beverage!

Hi Diana, I hope you all are doing well!

Hi Dave! Hi Bill! One of the many things I love about Christmas is connecting and reconnecting with some of my favorite people. :)

Bill, we're doing great! Thanks! Both using BasicMed. Tom is still giving flight instruction and keeps talking about retiring from flight instruction. We still have the Citabria at home on the farm. Didn't fly it as much this past year for various reasons, but plan to fly it much more in the coming year. I hope you're flying a lot.

What a fun blast from the past! No rum balls at the Steinholme, but I will be making Eggnog for New Years. I'm not flying as my Mooney is in the shop for an avionics upgrade which is taking forever.

Wow. Revived this thread from the dead. LOL.

I’ma let you finish, but South Park replaced Rum Balls with a much better holiday treat long long ago... RIP Isaac Hayes.

:) :) :)

2017 Rum Balls!
Chocolate-coffee version this year, made with 151 and Tia Maria + some espresso powder.
(Oh, and some almonds and coconut, because I needed more dry ingredients and had already used up the entire (smallish) box of gluten-free vanilla wafers I used in consideration of one of the recipients.)

Merry Christmas @Diana
