Average Flight Rules Map

Wow.. That's interesting. I'm surprised at how similar the trends are from year to year.
 
Something doesn't look kosher about those charts. Many of them seem to show far more sun at the beginning and end of the month than at the middle of the month. The overall seems reasonable but the details just don't look right to me.

Am I reading them wrong?
 
Dave, I just used one of the other ones and backspaced to the k and put in e38. Not much IFR here!

I think there is something wrong with them. Which is a shame, since they'd be interesting otherwise.

I think so too. In addition to what dbman5 pointed out, I noticed that the entry for PTK shows consistently much, much more IFR at PTK than at VLL, less than 15 nm away. It can't be right.
 
Let me introduce myself.
My name is Xavier and I created www.aviador.es and those charts you refer to.

There's nothing wrong with the charts, except for the fact that they are not well explained.

Let me try here:

What you see for each month is not the progression day by day, but the conditions charted by hour of day. (If you'd count the bars, each month would have 24 and not 30 or 31)
For each airport you will see an individual chart on top representing the current months' data, hour by hour.
Underneath, you'll find the same information for the past months, only that the chart has been tilted to the right.
That's why you see those patterns; because there is more IFR nearing dusk or dawn than in noon when the sun is heating.

BTW, have you seen the prevailing wind statistics? I love those! Find an example at: http://www.aviador.es/Weather/Wind/KROC-9
I think you'll love it. You can see, month by month, the prevailing winds for your favorite airport superimposed on a google map.

There are quite a few reasons why two close-by airports could have very different percentages of IMC conditions.

Namely:
  • proximity to a water mass (lakes, sea...)
  • field elevation, temperature...
  • Mountain configuration nearby
  • Equipment calibration
  • The weather observer
  • ...

In any case, the charts just represent what the METARs reported.

Let me introduce myself. I am Xavier the creator of www.aviador.es.

There's nothing wrong with the charts, except for the fact that they are not well explained.

What you see within each month are the hourly statistics, not daily. If you'd count the number of bars, you'd find 24 and not 30 or 31 (well, that would be for an airport that has a 24h weather observer)
In other words: take a look at the topmost chart, you'll see the hour labels in the horizontal axis. Tilt that chart to the right, and that's what will go to the year statistics at the end of the month.

The reason why you see patterns is that there's more IMC near dusk or dawn than near noon (because of the heating from the sun). Remember that the hours are UTC, and therefore you have to account for the time difference from your airport to GMT.

When I created the chart I thought it made a lot more sense to show the information this way.

Hi Xavier! Glad to read the explanation ... I found your site through a google search a while back for quick access to weather on mobile phones (blackberry for me).
 
Xavier, thank you for explaining your chart format. It does make sense now, but I'm still not convinced that the data represented is accurate.

There are quite a few reasons why two close-by airports could have very different percentages of IMC conditions.

Namely:
  • proximity to a water mass (lakes, sea...)
  • field elevation, temperature...
  • Mountain configuration nearby
  • Equipment calibration
  • The weather observer
  • ...
Of course. But the reason I mentioned those particular airports is that none of those usual reasons apply to them (except maybe equipment calibration). I am based at VLL and very often compare weather observations at my home field and at PTK. I have never noticed that reported conditions at PTK are consistently lower than at VLL and would be very surprised if that were true.

However as you can see format you choose confused many people. I would suggest you to change format to what most people expect - daily distribution as on top graph or put a good explanation on ow to read those graphs.

I'll think about it and maybe put a better explanation on how to read them. Or maybe I'll make them simpler by giving just %VFR, %IFR, etc for each month (just one chart, not a chart for each year) Then, I could make each month clickable and display more detailed statistics for each month...

I understand most people expect the chart to be what they would display. I bet most people don't even read what's explained on top of the charts. But, honestly, I don't see any value in displaying what was the percentage of each condition on a particular day say... three years ago. Instead, It is interesting to see what the percentage of each condition was hour by hour. But I agree, now it is kind of difficult to see that just by intuition.

As I said, I'll think about it and let you know.

I decided to show only one chart with monthly statistics. I think it is much clearer now than before. But now we've lost hourly statistics (which I may decide to include in a new page in the future)
I've also included the 'overall' statistics at the bottom of the page.

Well, you know you CAN see Wind Statistics, too.

Don't forget to check the other wind stats. You have:
  • Frequency distribution (how many metars for each direction)
  • Wind Profile (how many metars * how strong for each direction)
  • Average Wind
  • Max Wind

What we don't have (yet) is when the wind was such and such under VFR conditions.

I was getting increasingly concerned that I was going crazy... I kept reading about these hourly charts and checking the website and saying to myself, "AM I MISSING SOMETHING?". Then finally I figured out you changed them. I'd be curious to see them by hour as well.

Mountain weather reporting stations.... He didn't say they were airports. ;-). KSMP is Stampede Pass... I know that one from my Pacific NW days.

First, Xavier, let me add my thanks to you for your efforts.

Not surprised to see KUIL on the list because it is on the northwest coast of the Olympic Peninsula, close to the Hoh Rain Forest (duh). Just a strip of concrete...no facilities at all. Probably fewer than 50 flight operations per year. Glad to see that none of the airports in the Puget Sound area made the list.

What do you think about putting the exact percentage of each bar in the tool tip when the cursor hovers? Just a thought. It's great either way.

Not real sure what to make of that, we have a 5 month inversion cloud over the valley in winter, yeah sure it might be VFR technically but given the 6,000' wall around the airport you're not going anywhere far from the pattern VFR. I rarely even attempt Cross country flights between October and April.
