I have joined and paid for a website which may or may not one day lead to a meaningful relationship.

Here is the "experiment" - using pilot pictures, references, and listing "aviation" in the hobbies area

vs

Not making any pilot references whatsoever.

It will be interesting to see which produces less psychos.

This experiment may take several months to complete.

I think this falls under the category of, "How do you know there is a pilot at the party? He'll tell you."

Oh well, at least I will not be shortening my passenger list.

But you had a winner!!!

And he wasn't a psycho!

Did I mention the search parameters on this site allow me to specify less than 300 miles of distance between us as a requirement?

Good luck. I think the use of a dating service used to come with a considerable stigma. I think that is now declining. I have a number of friends and now several relatives who have used such services successfully. All are quite happy with the results (at least as far as I can tell). Good luck.

Thanks but I have known and loved / hated these services since the time they came with that stigma.

I remember "back in the day" when it came time to introduce a significant other to the parents - for example, after six months of dating let's say - we would have to brainstorm a unique idea of how we met. Didn't want to scare the parents. Nobody would admit publicly, back then, that they met their sweetheart online.

Re: Pilot - Social Expirement

Is one of your requirements to send a picture of plane and hangar?

.

um, are you thinking that pilots aren't psychos? at least when it comes to flying?

btw - any purpose behind the misspelling of experiment?

Good luck!

It will be interesting to see which one attracts the most attention.

If a guy lists aviation as a hobby I would think it would attract more women. If it's the opposite with your ad then that's pretty sad.

Re: Pilot - Social Expirement

No, actually I was interested in non-pilots (figured there would not be any pilots out there anyways). The look on the face of my very first passenger on their very first GA flight just made my whole journey worth it . . . all the expense, and trials, and frustrations - gone. I enjoyed teaching the passenger about flight characteristics, radios, navigation, and including that person in every aspect of the trip.

I would love to share aviation with others. It is not a deal breaker if they do not feel comfortable in a small plane and I am stuck flying without them.

No - as mentioned just now, this is for non-pilots. It would not be an experiment otherwise.

Also, sorry for the typo. I don't think there is any way to fix this? Is there?

Giving rides to first timers is about my favorite part of being a PP so far. Particularly kids. Hearing "This is awesome!" over the intercom is soooo cool!

aw, com'mon. you have to let us see your profiles!

and all responses from people from this site will describe themselves as wealthy, handsome and single.

I think it may be the opposite. We shall see. Also, I just realized a flaw in my experiment - the longer you are on a website, the more people have already seen you. So, if I post the pilot photos first and the non-pilot photos second, there may be a decline simply because of my duration on the site.

So this is not very scientific.

Agreed. I thought it was cool to show people what flying is all about. And it makes for a great story around the water cooler, too.

Co-worker #1 - "Hey Bob, what did you do this past weekend?"

Co-worker #2 - "I flew over the Golden Gate Bridge, had dinner at a cafe near the ocean, then flew back up the coastline while watching the sun set. What did you do this weekend, Mark?"

Co-worker #1 - "Oh . . . um . . . nothing. Just watched re-runs on TV until I passed out on the couch."

Not really interested in wealthy or handsome. Just enough money to support themself and any hobbies that make them happy, and not so ugly I scream and run away.

I think you have to pay money to see them. You cannot see them.

I think that's the classiest way I've ever been called cheap.

And it's certainly not the first time a lady has told me I have to pay to see pictures of her.

No - not cheap - but I don't understand what seeing my profile would do. It contains just a bunch of random words and multiple choice selections and pilot photos. Really, all those sites are the same.....

She said "you cannot see them" not just implying you are cheap, but broke too!

Here's the way I'd look at it. If a guy is scared away because you are a pilot and that you followed your passion well is he a guy you would want to date anyway?

it's ok, I just found "expire" to be funny.

And no, there isn't a way to change the title (that I know of anyway).

Yeah they will probably expire (as in pass away). I mean, 32 is old and everything.

You bring up a good point. Aviation is something huge and I did follow my passion to get my certificate.

I don't know if they would be scared away. It was just an experiment. I was thinking perhaps the "nerdy" aspect would be un-attractive. Or the perceived "risk taking".

Main photo - non-pilot. Extra photos - pilot stuff. Descriptions include pilot-ey things.

First person identified and possibly meeting next week.

Remember, nobody expects the first or even the fifth person to be a success. This could be a long and frustrating journey - with some excitement and some let down - just like my pilot's certificate!

Why don't you make two accounts? One with Kimberly and one just with Kim (either one can be the pilot) and see which one gets more interest?

This is a good idea except for the fact that all websites now cost a lot of money (some more than $50 per month). They don't let you email / make full use of the site without being a paid member, so making two accounts means paying double.

Unfortunately my experiment remains flawed.

Re: Pilot - Social Expirement

IMHO, this is a mistake.

The FBOs are full of pilots whose spouses don't enjoy flying, or (worse yet) won't fly with them at all. This then becomes a "wedge issue" between them -- something that never works out well for either side.

I've been blessed to have a spouse who caught the flying bug after I did, learned to fly herself, and now appreciates it as much as I do.

This has advantages on so many levels. When we fly, we are doing it as a family, which means it's not a source of aggravation for either of us. I have someone I can share my experiences with, who can both help and understands what aviation is all about. Best of all, I have a co-pilot to help me successfully and safely complete every flight -- and vice versa.

I know way too many pilots who are unhappy with their marital situation, precisely because they cannot share their joy of flying with their spouse. IMHO, if you want flying to remain an important part of your life, you should make love of aviation a prerequisite in dating material.

Re: Pilot - Social Expirement

you should make love of aviation a prerequisite in dating material.

I wouldn't go that far, but I would say instead you should rule out someone who does not think that its cool that you enjoy aviation!

Not to sound too experienced here, but step one is that whole old fashioned "chemistry" thing. I will worry about whether or not a person enjoys flying with me AFTER I actually find a single, honest, open, reliable, willing coffee shop partner. You have no idea how tough of a place San Francisco is. I'll need all the luck I can get.

Maybe you should travel more.

I met my husband on an airplane. We sat next to each other on a flight from Frankfurt to London in 1992.

That sounds very romantic. I actually met a guy on my flight to Michigan from San Francisco - he talked and asked questions about flying (I had asked to meet the captain and flight attendants came to my row asking if I was the pilot who wanted to see the flight deck).

I never got his name or information. Figured he must have been in a relationship already or just "wasting time" talking to me. He was going overseas and trying anything to stay awake and then crash when he got there so he could be automatically on their time zone . . . so "using me" for his sleeping needs.

32 isn't old. Heck I'm 18 with 42 years of experience and I don't act or feel 60. My first wife hated airplanes and we divorced in 1994. She re married and I had a long term relationship. 16 years later she was divorced and I was single and we got back together. She loves to fly now and her favorite airplane is the open cockpit N3N. She also puts up with me out at the hangar every day working on projects, she even helped rib stitch the Cub wing. Hopefully you can find a pilot to date, then you have to argue over who flies. Anyone else will probably be intimidated that you are a pilot. Good Luck.
