Can Hydrocodone cause nightmares?

She is doing well, well enough for me to leave at home so I can work. She's getting home therapy for a couple of weeks and then she'll be going to therapy. Glad to hear you're progressing. Those PT's know how to keep you sore. Just when you get to thinking you're doing well they come up with some real wild exercise for you to try. It's always, "I've got a new exercise we want to try today".

We didn't get flooded as we're NE of the city and only got around 10" or so. The worst hit is out west of the city mostly. Still have a part of I-20 west shut down. Many creeks and rivers were 10' or more over their previous record crests.
 
i am a police officer in missouri and i have been taking hydrocodone for the past month in order to dull the pain from breaking my left arm at the elbow. i personally have had some very vivid realistic dreams about two hours after i take my perscribed 2 pills (500mg each) and go to bed. i do think that this is a side effect that is slightly more common than people might think, it's just that it was rarely reported durring the medical studies prior to it being passed by the FDA. and i also believe that few people report it to their doctors either because they forget to or because they don't believe that hydrocodone is the cause and blame the dreams on stress instead. i hope some of this info helps.

Hydrocodone is not dosed at 500 mg. You are referring to 500 mg of acetaminophen (APAP, Tylenol) that is commonly combined with 5 or 10 mg of Hydrocodone.

Anybody reading your post is unable to determine how much Hydrocodone you actually took, but my professional guess is it was two tabs of 5 mg, giving a total of 10 mg Hydrocodone and 1000 mg of APAP /Tylenol.

I had ankle surgery about five years ago. Whatever painkiller the doc prescribed gave me vivid and disturbing dreams. Not quite nightmare, just over the top wierd.

I threw the pills in the garbage because of it and went to over the counter Motrin. Worked fine.
 
I am getting more vivid dreams as a result of the antihistamines I'm taking. It's my belief that any thing that alters your level of conciousness can result in different dream habits. It really doesn't matter what the mechanism is, though some are more potent than others.

I can see how people get addicted to it though. When I've got something bothering me, it does feel good to pop a couple of em.

Yes it can. I surely had one. I was so angry and acting so mean and struggling for covers. I was not myself and I didn't like that one bit. I woke up and called the Name Jesus. It was not a pleasant experience. I want those types of dreams to stay away from me. I rebuke them in the Name of Jesus..

I used to race motorcycles and I once turned my left radius and ulna into a real mess at the wrist. I never found the need for prescription meds more than a week or so out from breaking bones. With the exception of the arm break, because they had to set it a week later and that caused some pain for a few days.

I can't imagine being on vicodin or percocet for that long. A month is a really long time. In my case I only needed to take them for a few days after before the negative side effects began to eclipse the waning pain. In the case of my cleanly broken collarbone, a month out I was walking around like nothing happened and 3 weeks after that I was tearing up the track again.

Unless you have some special circumstances, it's time to ask yourself if you really need to be on that stuff.

By the way I never had any psychological issues either. Just stomach issues mostly. Then again I was not on it for a month.

Thank u for posting this. Taking hydrocodone for back pain after serious car accident and having awful real dreams of new crashes that I dont survive. Will never take this stuff again. I can live w pain but not terror.

Or maybe they just enjoy the dreams.

When I was using nicotine patches to quit smoking years ago, the pharmacist warned me that wearing the patch at night could cause vivid dreams. And he wasn't kidding. I had some really wild dreams -- in living color, 3-D, Sensaround, Smellivision, and Dolby Surround Sound, all rolled up into one.

The thing was, I started to enjoy them. They made sleeping more entertaining, I guess.

Now as for hydrocodone, I took Vicodin exactly once, the afternoon after I had my diseased and adhesed old gall bladder removed. I got so loopy, droopy, and dizzy that I decided that I'd rather deal with the pain. How people manage to get addicted to that stuff is beyond me.

Many years ago (early 80s) I had major surgery and the surgeon prescribed Tylenol 3 (Codeine). Unfortunately, my mother was visiting and made sure I took the pain killers no matter how many times I said I wasn't in substantial pain. (Of course Mom lived on tranks and followed the mantra Better Living Thru Modern Chemistry). One pill and she found me on the floor curled up against the wall. That was the last time I took any type of pain killer outside the hospital. Morphine (once and only once in the hospital) got me incredibly nauseous as well as wacko.
 
Glad (or sorry) to see this is nothing new. Foot surgery for cancer end of July followed by kidney stones in November. I very briefly took 5/325 for about a week. For 3 days after I stopped I dreamt some stranger was chasing me with a giant squid, I was carrying two starving African babies around and then 2 dead relatives who, ala horror movie style, followed me around but wouldn't ever let me see their faces. I'll just take some plain old ibuprofen and tough it out. Less tiresome. Less creepy.
 
hydrocodone definitely causes me to have bizarre and bad nightmares even though it lets me sleep. I wake up horrified in the middle of the night from these horrible dreams.
 
Sounds like you guys can't pass a drug test for the most part...

Only time I took Tylenol 3 (after surgery) my mother found me curled up on the floor in the corner of the living room. Never again.
 
Absolutely.

My ex-wife took them all the time, and she was a nightmare.
 
I'm one of those folks for whom opioids serve as a mild stimulant.

If I need a Percocet or equivalent I'll take it. But if it's at bedtime, I can count on about 3 or 4 hours wide awake, albeit sometimes in a weird semi-dream state. Not unpleasant, but most times all I want to do is sleep.
 
I keep having recurring nightmares of spending all my time reading PoA and suddenly realizing that I am replying to necroposts.

Wait, am I awake or dreaming? This is so vivid..... :eek:
 
I've had bronchitis that got so bad I could not breathe due to coughing many times. At that point I'll take just about anything to make it stop. For me, codeine guarantees that I will have violent nightmares, constipation, and feel intoxicated enough to affect any serious work. Hydrocodone, at least for me, has none of these side effects. I used to not understand when my doctor wouldn't give it to me when I was sitting in front of him with symptoms that hardly seemed within the limits of my acting skills. Then I had a conversation with another doctor who told me that my guy probably feels that he's putting himself at risk by prescribing it. I just go to urgent care now when I'm that sick. Why they don't worry about prescribing it I may never understand.

I have no doubt that this **** is addictive and dangerous. I don't seek it out for recreation. But I'm glad it's there when I'm coughing to the point where I can't even catch my breath.
 
Having never suffered a nightmare in my 58 years of life, I will need to see if I can get me some of this hydrocodone stuff so I can experience one.

Just kidding. Not about never having nightmares as I have seriosuly never had one but about taking drugs so I can have one.

I have ALWAYS dreamed (dreamt ?) in color.
Doesn't everyone ???

Your dream Sounds kinda like the movie "THEY LIVE".
 
I was on those devil pills after my back surgery in 2003. For several days after I got home from the hospital, I didn't sleep well, had weird dreams, and felt awful during the day. That's when I realized it was those stupid pain pills making me miserable - not the pain. I quit taking them and managed my pain with acetaminophen and ice packs thereafter. I started feeling better immediately.

But since we've revived it, I'll update my status. I was prescribed Vicodin again last year following a procedure. The procedure involved... well... let's just say after 3 kids we're done and there won't be any more. :)

About 3 AM the night after the procedure I had this dream that my son kept on kicking me right where the procedure was done. Woke up, realized the Vicodin was wearing off and so I was, in fact, having pain again in the affected area. Took another Vicodin, went back to sleep. Didn't take any more after that as the pain reverted to a dull ache by the morning.

I'm not sure in this case whether I'd say that the hydrocodone caused the nightmares or more that I was having a dream that was based off of a real pain that was occurring.
 
Lol, wonder who many people talking about their hydrocodone experiences are against legalizing pot :lol:

That's weird that you mentioned that because today when I saw my Neurologist for my C4/C5 replacements back in 2012, that I started taking hydrocodone about a year ago for, he asked me if they were giving me nightmares. I said I wasn't sure as I have gone through a bit of depression lately without being able to workout for three weeks so maybe that could be it. I have been working out religiously for 32 years at 3-6 days per week so to go for three weeks is excruciatingly painful if that makes since. Just miss my natural healthy endorphins that my body needs.
My only issue recently has been sleep paralysis and have no idea where that is coming from. Good luck on your situation. Leanne
