Colorado Pilots...

Yes, the sacrifices I make in the name of customer satisfaction. B)

(and it beats the heck out of the 6+ hour round trip drive)

Can't go this weekend. Cherokee is in the shop :( ..... getting a new GPS/COM :) Oh yeah I'm not complain', well except for the 15.6 AMU pricetag.

No problem, you can come along with either Clark or me. We could even play musical seats with Mari!

OK, it looks like the weather is still holding. Might be cloudy but looks like decent flying. Sounds like we should stay somewhat close to home. So, Greeley?

How about GXY at 11:15 Saturday morning? Looking forward to see folks again and meeting new.

Eric Jensen, Jabiru N697J - FNL

Works for me. Just watched the weather tonight and in true CO fashion, Saturday could be anything between "clear and still" and "clear up to our butts and still coming down" on Saturday.

Doug has the Skyhawk from 12-3, I think, so we'd be late. We talked in e-mail earlier about flying up to see y'all in 79M, then moving the Skyhawk flight back to around 1 PM. Still kinda chops things up a bit. Well... We'll see what Saturday brings...

Wife told me tonight that she needs to go to Craig next Saturday morning, so we've tentatively planned to keep an eye on the weather for that. I'll either be flying her over at dawn Saturday morning, or driving her over after 8PM Friday night. Yawn.

Flying sure sounds better if the weather would allow it. This time of year though, the Yukon is primary and the Skylane's the backup plan, unless Mother Nature were to give the green light. ;-)

Works for me. Any designated pax in the area, please advise.

And the problem is? So we'll sit around for a while, we'll dally on our way to Greeley - practicing slow flight is always a useful exercise.

For those at FTG, Clark & I have 4-5-6 extra seats depending on your correspondence to the FAA standard passenger.

We'll probably still be here. I said 11:15 because it gets a little busy on Saturdays. But once we're parked, whose in a hurry?

We're out. Plane's in the shop and the kid's need to be shuttled to activities.

This designated passenger is probably 2/3 of a person. What time do you want to meet at FTG?

I'll probably fire up a bit early to go out east and turn some 100LL into noise...so maybe a 10:15 to 10:30ish departure.

Sounds about right. I go slower, so a 10:30 dep. is perfect for a 11:15 arrival.

OK, I'll probably show up around 10am. I'll even remember to bring my own headset this time. It's in the car already.

Talked to Doug on the phone. He wasn't sure what he wanted to do. I told him, "You're PIC!" :) Heh heh.

So, we may be up... or not. He said something about doing Crash & Dash at KAPA. I had to "ring-off" as the Brits say, as I had a work conference call in my other ear.

I will have the Co-Pilot Song as performed by the USAF Singing Sergeants all queued up in the iPod/iPhone. :)

And I'm off to go send him a link to this thread, since he made the grave error of saying, "I haven't done PoA yet... I really need to do that."

"Well, by golly... I have this URL right HERE that you need to click on, old man!"

Wx seems to be holding. I took a friend over to GXY for lunch today, the airport is still there. So hope to see a few folks tomorrow. My cell is 970.214.0076.

I also have a seat at FTG. Mine's an old 180, so the back seats are most theoretical (unless you're a double amputee).

Okay, Doug says we're comin' to GXY... we'll be up "sometime" after noon! :) 303-594-5444 cell. I won't have the Skylane with me, but I may call the other guys in the Skylane and tell them to bring it up... in case Doug scares me too much. (Ha. Kidding.)

Outstanding!

So it looks like a Gaggle of Cherokees from FTG - GXY?

Hey y'all, the new governor needs his "personal space" coming up here soon... not tomorrow, but just covering your six...

It's just the state capitol, and tiny, and just for 3 hours around lunch time. They figure a bigger crowd, which won't happen. The area will be under a winter storm watch, 70% chance of snow and high temps about 14 F. The news crews are gonna be unhappy. No one else, unless it's on their job description, will probably show up.

Yep. I got an invitation, followed up by an email suggesting I attend.
Nope, no way. 14F? That's just crazy.

There WAS a Grumman Cheetah there, just not part of our group. Also a Grumman Widgeon (re-engined to flat engines, not round ones?) pulled in during lunch. And a gaggle of RVs.

Four Cherokees a Cessna and a Stork, um Jabiru. That was a pretty good turn out for a January fly-in! Nice seeing everyone again and meeting some others. Thank you to Clark and Murphey for the rides and for letting me experiment with my small plane skills.

Mari had a pretty big grin back at FTG. Dunno if that was because she survived the trip up and back or because she enjoyed the day...

Hazy day in sunny Colorado. Lots of folks out flying and lots more geese. Got to dodge two flocks just after departure from GXY. I really thought I was going to be Sullied for a few moments. Good thing geese don't split-s like seagulls do.

It could be both... Mostly I was smiling because I didn't flatten any tires or collapse any struts. :D

My conversation to myself went, "Keep the pattern close! Remember to flare enough... oops, not that high! Right rudder... but don't stomp on it! You're overcontrolling again..."

I really thought I was going to be Sullied for a few moments. Good thing geese don't split-s like seagulls do.
There are a few lakes out there where you could have performed a Sully...

Nice to see Greg again and meet the rest of you. Lunches can't be too long when you with pilots:)

I did find today the common name for an Australian stork is also jabiru. The name did originate in South America.

That's true! Thanks everyone, I had a great time. I willing to bet Doug did too, I'm pretty sure the ink on his temporary certificate is still wet.
It was hazy, but any day without bumps is a good day for me.

We should do this more often!

It was really great to meet everyone. I promise I'll bring the mythical 79M next tine!! (GRIN!). Got a note from Greg he was sorry he missed us over on FaceBook... No problem, the "penalty" is just that we have to do it again real soon!

My wife Karen would love to come out and meet everyone too. Her passion is singing in a barbershop quartet and chorus, and the chorus had a rehearsal today. She hasn't really been bitten by the "I want to fly the plane" bug, but she loves fun trips. We've done Houston to visit family in a Skyhawk long ago, and Phoenix, Santa Fe, Alamosa, Las Vegas, and all the local Front Range airports in the Skylane so far...

Doug had a great time. It was interesting to get his perspective. "Thanks for coming along, I probably would have cancelled in this weather." Wait, huh? Oh yeah... You're a Colorado pilot and rarely see a single cloud in the sky! :)

We talked up and back about the haze and visibility and how I've flown VFR in worse viz... Los Angeles smog comes to mind when I flew out of VNY. Ghastly.

And the opposite where you can see a hundred miles in-between all the little puffs along your route of flight while you play dodge-the-puff-balls as long as they're spaced far enough apart that you still have legal lateral limits from 'em. (I love that by the way, but it's rare!)

We're so spoiled with so much gorgeous CAVU here!

It was also a good sign he has personal minimums and will stick to 'em as he gets more comfortable. He's methodical and careful too. We chatted about our preflight habits, checklists, and other stuff. What fun to fly with someone else. Always learning. He also said he enjoyed getting a little taste of crew coordination and a little help from someone rated in the other seat.

I looked in the logbook. I haven't been up in a Skyhawk since September of 2007. ;) JEFA has a nice aircraft there! For someone who's used to "steam gauges" and has taken a G1000 FITS ground school and taxiied out in a G1000 equipped 182, and cancelled the flight at the run-up for wild un-forecast winds whipping up and then taxiing back... I wasn't TOO ham fisted with the dual Garmin 530s in the panel. ;) As a "computer guy" for a living, seeing a consistent user interface between the two was refreshing. (Wish my own employer would find value in that! Grin...)

Kent was right. PoA is the friendliest aviation board on the Net! Looking forward to the next get-together!

P.S. That was Doug's second flight on his PP-ASEL. He was a Sport Pilot before the upgrade so he has about 100 hours in his logbook.

re: "do it again soon" ... thanks to Murphy (Blanche) for tossing out the prior get-together suggestion and this one, too, I think. Now that I think about it, she really did kick it off about 4 gatherings ago, of which I missed the first couple... wait, even further back than that - recalling the middle of a blizzard get-together at the Buckhorn last winter ...

Looking forward to continuing this. BTW, did anyone get a chance to talk to my neighbor that came along with me? Dave invited me to join the flying club we currently belong to - he's been a member since the mid-60s (yeah, it's been around that long). Anyway, Dave's a retired 747 Captain, and has a lot of interesting stories. He came along mostly to get his 3 landings in the Dakota for currency in that plane again, and since I've been flying it, he said "take me up and show me the airplane". No self-imposed pressure on me on THAT flight and landing back at BJC again! :D

I just checked the YE website - Doug's been eligible to fly as soon as he got his Sport Pilot cert.

"All participating pilots must be members of EAA and must hold an appropriate Airman’s Certificate (Sport Pilot or greater)
Pilots must possess a current Medical Certificate (if applicable)"

Good to know they didn't have to change it.

The Widgeon never had round engines - Many (most?) have been converted to flat engines, but they originally had an inverted inline six.
