I am looking into purchasing an aircraft and was looking for some suggestions. I know that one aircraft will not completely fulfill all of my needs. Here is what I am looking for:
-about 80% of my flights will be within 100nm of my home airport.
-the other 20% will likely be within 400nm.
-I would like two seats, do not need 4.
-Cruise around 110-130
-Aerobatic, I am looking to start competing in aerobatics (I have aerobatic experience 30hrs or so), but have yet to compete. I don't need an MX2, but would prefer more aerobatic than say a Citabria.
-I'm also going to fly formation in the aircraft, so the more visibility the better.
-I love tailwheel aircraft, but tri-gear is ok. (have about 60hrs or so, J3, 8KCAB, Great Lakes)
-Would like to be able to keep IFR current in the aircraft, but there are plenty of rentals available.
Can you give your top 2 or 3 suggestions?

Thanks for the help.

T34.

You didn't mention price range, but since you seem to want some all-around capability, none does this better than an RV. You could outfit an RV-4/6/7/8 with an oil accumulator and air/oil separator (half Raven system) or full inverted Raven/Christen (no accumulator) and have an extremely capable airplane that will blow away 110-130 and still be perfectly capable up to the Sportsman Category. Lots of RV's fly formation. Just great airplanes. Except for a Pitts/Extra/MX, puts anything built in a factory to shame.

I agree, a -7 for experimental and a Super D for certified.

Wouldn't work for competition aerobatics.

Wouldn't work well, anyway. Neither does a T-28, but there's hella fun at contests involving guys who don't give a rat's ass about percentage points and just have a good time with the flights...definitely breaks up the monotony of all those Pitts/Extras. :D

I would also recommend the Super D, unless you want to compete above Sportsman. An acquaintance of mine just won Sportsman at this year's Nationals in his Super D and he came in first in several chapter contests this year in the Sportsman category. He also enjoys traveling in his Super D.

I don't know how many Super D's are IFR certified.

Thanks for the input so far...

Does anyone have any experience with any of the following:

-Zlin 242L
-One Design DR-109
-PZL M-26
-Extra 200

FYI: The majority of my formation flying will be with Yak 52s and CJ6s.

Thanks

Piper Warrior 161 , if you want Cert Plane. 4 people and does nothing fancy. Mine flys like a dream. Dave

I'd buy or build an RV 6,7 or 8.. for that sort of mission. In the long run will be much cheaper too, if you learn to maintain it and have a good working relationship with an A&P for your annuals.

an IAR 823 flies nicely with yaks and cjs and it goes further on a tank of gas... lands on grass too.. and +6/-3 airframe

If flying formation with CJs is a major goal, why not get a Yak 53 or CJ6? Dissimilar types can make for problems, especially if you do any formation acro as the plane's response to climbs and dives will be different.

Thanks for all the replies so far...

PittsDriver, I was wondering why you suggested an RV-6 as compared to a -6 or -8.

Also, any experience with any of the suggestions, other than the Super-D, as I am familiar with it, would be appreciated....
