Don't know if this is the best place to post, but my wife and I would like to take a trip west (from Florida) this weekend. We think we can make it as far as Louisiana, spend the night and return to Florida the next day.

Does anyone know of any cool destinations in Louisiana (besides New Orleans) where we can get a nice room (think AAA 3 diamonds) and a nice meal and maybe a do a very little sight seeing? A good drink or two will be nice, but since this is a short flying trip, that is secondary.

Does it have to be LA? I loved visiting Vicksburg, MS. Lots of stuff to do and a nice B&B. There are two airports you could use. I actually used the Vicksburg one and they were great.

Shreveport Dowtown (DTN) is not bad. Good accomidations around, river boat casinos, plenty of restaurants and the 8th Air Force museum at nearby Barksdale AFB.

Acadianna Regional (ARA) in New Iberia has a friendly FBO, long runway with a parallel water runway for sea planes, lots of military gas and gos, local cuisine, and a tour of Tobasco factory.

Jennings (3R7) Holiday inn right on the field, lots of local food, home of the End of Season Stearman Fly In in October.

You may want to postpone until another weekend. It may not be a fun trip this weekend...

I have been noticing that.
It doesn't have to be LA. But we are planning a trip all the way to the West Coast of CA from the East coast of FL this year and we were going to make a few shorter experimental runs to get familiar with the geography.

The casinos have shuttles from DTN. They are about a mile or 2 away. Across from the casinos is a nice outdoor mall. There is a science museum near the casinos and the riverfront area is nice.

I'm planning on flying to Jennings in a week or so. Do you know of any good restaurants within walking distance of the airport?

This is good information! Thank you!

I'm hoping to leave next Friday and who knows, Jennings may be as far as I can get by the following Saturday. :D

Missed this-

Try Natchitoches (KIER) - it's a charming town, you stay at the Church Street Inn, right down town, good food and interesting and appealing historical stuff. Excellent airport, too. 3 crew cars, and tehy are very generous in allowing their use (take the red one).

By the way, it's pronounced, "Nak-a-tish" - Really!

I thought it was "Nak-a-dish", not to be confused with his brother, Nacogdoches (TX):D

Same-same, I think.

Nice place, in any event.

WHen he says the Holiday Inn is on field it fails to mention that the hotel has its own ramp and a few tie downs over on the corner of the field. Gate in the fence. It doesnt get much more convenient than that.. a short walk from the ramp to the desk..

I was reluctant to mention the gate and tiedowns since i hadn't been ther in quite sometime and didn't know if the TSA had had gone out of their way to further harrass GA. Nice to know it's still available.

Attached is a photo that I took from the balcony outside my hotel room last Sunday. When I landed at Jennings on Sunday, the FBO was closed and no one was around. I had NO idea where the Holiday Inn was, so I started taxiing around the airport. I finally headed for the line of buildings east of the grass runway, looking for the Holiday Inn. I couldn't find a Holiday Inn sign, so I finally parked next to the fence to go exploring. The Holiday Inn is no longer there because it's now a Day's Inn....that was why I couldn't find it.

I didn't know there was a paved parking area north of the Quality Inn to the north of the Day's Inn until the next morning when I went exploring...I should have parked there even though the hike with all my stuff would have been longer. But, I found the tie-down anchors for the Stearman fly-ins in the grass and tied down to one of those.

Walker's was open when I checked in, but when I went down to eat, they had closed early for Mother's Day. So, I went next door the the little restaurant in the truck stop and had some yummy chicken gumbo and crawfish étouffée.

Several people talked with me when I was walking back and forth, doing stuff with the airplane. They were curious. :D A lady who was working at the Day's Inn hollered at me through the fence and asked if I was a woman pilot. She said she'd never seen a woman pilot before. She said all the Stearman pilots from the Stearman fly-in that she ever saw were men, so she had never seen a woman pilot.

If I ever go back there, I'll stay at the Quality Inn next door to the Day's Inn. It looked much cleaner.

I went to the Gulf Air FBO the next morning and bought fuel from them. The line guy kept asking me if I wanted to buy fuel at the other place since it was cheaper, but I'm not very good at self-fueling since I'm short and the hose and nozzles are usually so heavy.

BTW, I'm glad no one was there at the airport when I landed. It was my second worse landing of the trip.
